[Leave to]

In a drama I watched the other day, there was a scene in which a woman threw herself into a violently flowing river and let the current wash over her, believing that she would be all right. This is a painful practice that has the meaning of a ritual to join a religious group. The woman is terrified of being swept away in the water, but she is unable to do anything on her own, so she surrenders herself to the current, and as a result, she successfully returns to life. I think this scene tested the woman’s ability to “trust and surrender” in the story.
This is not to say that the action scenes are particularly spectacular. It is beautifully done, but it is nothing surprising in today’s world of advanced computer graphics and compositing techniques. However, I naturally became very emotionally involved and found myself reliving the scene as if I had become the woman in the scene. I think the situation in this scene caught my current problems.

This woman is painfully aware of her own powerlessness on the way to being swept away. From a different perspective, it could be said that she found herself unable to resist anything in the face of the overwhelming power of nature. Struck by the fear that she might die, but despairing of her helpless situation, she could only “surrender” in the end. Through this experience, the woman realized that “belief” leads to the survival of life and gives her hope, and the story depicts how she came to see the path she should take. I think that the film very well expressed how the woman “peeled off her skin” or stepped up one step as a human being.

Can we jump in knowing that an irresistible situation awaits us? Could I throw myself into the bottom of a river where I might die? In a spiritual sense, I am struggling with my inability to do so. Can I risk my life and surrender? In other words, can I believe in Jesus? This is my biggest problem right now. Perhaps it is the theme of my life. I am afraid.
In one specific word, I believe it comes down to ‘can I throw away all my desires? All of them, completely. Right or wrong, ‘desire’ will often motivate me to act, and I think it is a big part of what makes up my personality. If I were to throw it all away completely, I would consider the change to be almost equivalent to a “rebirth”. It means throwing away something that I have come to hold dear. It is very frightening, and I wonder if I would be able to live properly after doing such a thing at the age of over 50. I am just worried.

But there is no doubt that there is a part of me that wants to take steps in that direction. A journey that may or may not be possible. I may not be able to do it even if I die. But what I am willing to try is probably true. I feel like that is where my ability to die comfortably depends on it. Well, there is no way to know when I die, but I am probably not the only one who would like to meet my end with a feeling closer to “satisfaction” than a feeling of regret.

I want to go up one step, too.
