自動英訳システムを使ったこのブログの英語併記を始めて一週間ほど経った。正直、大変苦戦している。このままでは続けられそうにない。日本語の文章を書くだけでも顎が上がってしまっているのに、さらにその英訳文の修正作業で1時間は持って行かれてしまう。休み中だったので何とか対応できたが、これから間違いなくメインの業務の方が忙しくなってくるので、断念せざるを得ないかと気分が沈みがちだった。

　インターネット上で見つけたサービスを使っているのだが、この訳文がどうもよろしくない。書き終わった日本語を翻訳にかけて、上がってきたものを軽く見直すくらいでアップできれば理想的なのだが、そのままではとてもとてもアップできない。
　「完璧」は最初から求めていない。いくらAIを搭載しているシステムだとしても、微妙なニュアンスなどを的確に表現するのは難しいだろうから。言わんとしていることが大まかに伝わればいいと思っていた。ところが私の非力な英語能力でさえも容易に気づく間違いが訳文の中に散見される。
　単語選択の仕方もそうだが、一番困るのは「人称」が変えられてしまうこと。私が書いている文なのだから、私としては主語を省略して書きたい。何でもかんでも文頭に「私が」をつけるのはダサい。だから文尾を「思う」や「考える」等として、文頭の「私が」を割愛するのだが、それを英訳システムが分かってくれない。「he」や「they」に変換してしまうのだ。そうすると文全体の意味合いが違ってきてしまう場合がある。最初は「こういう場合、英語では三人称になるのか～」等と敬意を持って受け入れていたが、「やっぱりおかしい」という感じになってきた。

　気になり始めると一言一句が気になってしまうものだ。最初は「まぁいいか」とスルーしていた箇所も段々と直したくなっていく。そして問題は「人称」のことだけに留まらないことに気づいてきて、そうすると、英訳作業を始めた1月1日まで遡って確認したくなっている。そんなことをしていると本当に日本語の方が疎かになってしまいそうで危機感を感じてきた。
　誰か信頼できる英語が得意な「人間」に英訳してもらおうかとも考えたが、費用のことを考えると準備できそうにないし、私が書いた直後に訳してもらわないと「毎日」書くことにならないので、物理的にも実現は厳しいと思う。

　途方に暮れていたところ、そういえばインターネット上で探していた時にもう一社の良さそうな英訳システムを見つけていたことを思い出し、ダメ元で同じ文章で試してみた。比較してみるとこちらの方が断然良さそうなのだ。費用もこちらの方がリーゾナブルで、「安くてより良い」という事実に少々驚いている。もしかしたらちゃんとした契約書類のような硬い内容を訳すことが得意なアプリと、こういったブログのような“砕けた”文章がうまいものと、いろいろ特性があるのかもしれない。この安いシステムの方でしばらくまた試してみようと思う。
　何か新しいことをしようとすると、いつも簡単にはいかないものだとつくづく思う。でもここで試行錯誤しておけば経験にもなるし、もしうまく行かなくてもスッキリと諦めがつくのではないだろうか。

Mistranslation

　It has been about a week since I started writing this blog in English using the automatic English translation system. To be honest, I am struggling a lot. I don’t think I will be able to continue at this rate. Just writing the Japanese text is enough to make my jaw drop, and then the English translation takes up an hour of my time. Since I was on vacation, I managed to cope with it, but my main work will definitely get busier from now on, and I was feeling down that I would have to give up the project.

　I am using a service I found on the Internet, but the translation is not very good. It would be ideal if I could translate the written Japanese and upload the translated version after a quick review, but I can’t upload it as it is.
　Perfection” is not what we are looking for from the beginning. Even if the system is equipped with AI, it would be difficult to accurately express subtle nuances. I thought it would be enough if I could roughly convey what I was trying to say. However, even my limited English ability could easily notice mistakes in the translation.
　The word choice is one thing, but what bothers me the most is that the “person” is changed. For me, I want to omit the subject since it is a sentence I am writing. It is lame to put “I am” at the beginning of every sentence. Therefore, I omit “I think” at the end of a sentence and omit “I am” at the beginning of a sentence, but the English translation system doesn’t understand that. It converts it to “he” or “they”. If you do that, the meaning of the whole sentence may be different. At first, I accepted it with respect, thinking, “In this case, the third person is used in English,” but then I began to feel that it was not right.

　Once you start worrying about it, you start worrying about every word. Even the parts that I initially dismissed as “oh well,” I gradually wanted to fix. Then I began to realize that the problem was not limited to “person” and I wanted to go back to January 1, when I started the English translation work, to check. I’m beginning to feel a sense of crisis, as if I’m really going to neglect the Japanese language if I do that.
　I thought about having someone reliable “human” who is good at English translate it into English, but I don’t think I would be able to prepare it considering the cost, and it would be physically difficult to achieve this because I would have to have it translated right after I write it to write it “daily”.

　At a loss, I remembered that I had found a good English translation system from another company when I was looking for one on the Internet, so I gave it a try with the same sentence. I tried it on the same sentence and found that this one looked much better. The cost is also more reasonable, and I am a little surprised at the fact that it is “cheaper and better”. Maybe there are two types of apps: one is good at translating hard content such as contract documents, and the other is good at translating “simple” text such as blogs. I’m going to try this cheaper system again for a while.
　I realize that it is not always easy when you try something new. But if we try and do it here, it will be an experience, and even if it doesn’t work out, we will be able to give up easily.

　In some places it was translated to mean the opposite.
