[Baseball Fanatic]

Baseball Fanatic

I can’t help but write about him. I don’t want to make a habit of writing about someone when they pass away, but the news of the death of Mr. Shinji Mizushima, a cartoonist, reminded me of my baseball boy days. Although I had never met the famous Mr. Mizushima, it is not an exaggeration to say that he was one of my benefactors. The baseball manga “Dokaben” was my starting point, something I couldn’t do without.

Anyway, I have never read a book that I have concentrated on as much as “Dokaben” over and over again. I think there were more than 40 volumes in the series, but I was given all of them, and I read them until they were really worn out. I wondered how I could read them so many times when I knew how it was going to end. I remember how excited I was every time I read it. I think my father was also reading it at the time. It was an unprecedented hit manga.

Recently, diversity has become a popular topic, but Mr. Mizushima has been advocating the importance of individuality for more than 40 years. I believe that Dokaben would not have become as popular as it did if it were not for the dynamism of the unique teammates surrounding the main character, Taro Yamada, a high school baseball player. I think it’s the same with movies, novels, or anything else, but it’s interesting when the spotlight is properly shone on each of the characters with distinctive personalities. An ugly genius pianist playing second base is a little too far-fetched. It’s impossible for a high school student to play with weed in his mouth. How much I was encouraged by the way they interacted with each other and faced strong opponents to win.
In addition, the characters of their rivals are also very strong. Shiranui, Domon, Sakata Sankichi, the Inukai brothers, Yoshitsune and Musashibo, and many other famous characters were created. The profound tactics of the game, which did not seem very much like the world of high school baseball, were fascinating, and I think there was a part of me that wistfully fantasized that it might really be happening in some other dimension.
I think all the kids who started playing baseball back then read the books, and probably many of them started playing baseball because of Dokaben. Although the popularity of “baseball” in general may have waned a bit in recent years, I think Mr. Mizushima deserves more credit for continuing to explore the appeal of baseball and contributing to baseball culture in Japan.

Through his way of life, Mr. Mizushima teaches us that making people happy and giving courage to children are not only the accomplishments of people who live flashy lives like professional baseball players. There are many different ways to be involved in baseball. Just keep looking at what you really like, and if you find your own way of interacting with it, then you can continue to be involved with it.
I imagine that Mr. Mizushima was a rare and stubborn person who was able to immerse himself in what he loved without paying attention to anything else. He may have had talent, but more than that, I have a strong impression that he was a man of guts who hated to lose. I think he must have loved baseball from the bottom of his heart.
Thank you very much for all your works. I really appreciate it.

I used to have squeezed the bat with a beer bottle.
