「シカゴ・ファイア」のことをそろそろ書かなければならない。私が今ハマりにハマっている海外ドラマだ。アメリカで作られているドラマシリーズで、アマゾンプライムではシーズン7まで視聴できるようになっているが、現地では現在シーズン10が放送されているらしい。ちょっと調べてみるとシーズン11までの制作が決定しているそうだ。これだけ長く続いていれば、大人気シリーズであることは疑いようがない。
ドラゴンもロボットも魔法使いも、架空のものは何も登場せず、久しぶりに実写の映像を存分に楽しんでいる。消防隊員の物語なので火事や爆発のシーンが多く、合成技術を使っているとは思うが、ほとんどが実際に撮影した素材で編集しているように見える。私の目があまりにもCGなどの加工映像に慣れてしまったせいか、生の映像がやけに新鮮に感じられる。やっぱり実写は良い。毎回のように火事現場や交通事故などの壮絶なシーンが出てくるのだが、リアルで迫力満点だし、細部に至るまでしっかり準備して撮影しているように思える。ドラマの中では消防隊員たちの素晴らしいチームワークが毎回表現されているが、恐らく制作撮影隊のチームワークもそれに勝るとも劣らないのではないか。あれだけ大規模なシーンを含んだ内容で、1シーズンに20話以上制作していることがそれを証明している。
以前から「シカゴ・ファイア」の存在は知っていたのだが、食指が動かなかった。何となくストーリー的に退屈なのではないかと、先入観があった。だいぶ昔に消防士を題材にした「バック・ドラフト」という大好きな映画があった。カート・ラッセルが炎に包まれた中から人を助け出すスローモーションのシーンは映画史に残る名シーンだと思う。しかしそれは1回こっきりの映画だったから良かったのであって、シリーズ物のドラマではマンネリ化するのではないかと懐疑的に考えていた。火事にそんなにバリエーションがあるとは思えなかったし、毎週決まって火事が発生することも無理矢理な設定に感じていた。それほど火事が起きない日本に住んでいるからかもしれない。正直なところ私の日本の消防士に対するイメージは、「暇なんだろうな」という推測に尽きる。
現在シーズン3の中盤を過ぎた辺りを視聴している。主に30歳代のメインキャスト数名を中心にした構成でストーリーは展開していて、仲間同士の接し方や男女関係のもつれ方等、私には少し理解しづらい部分もあるにはある。けれどもやっぱり脚本家が優秀なんだろうと思う。シリーズを通して観る側を飽きさせない展開は見事というしかない。そして本の素晴らしさにしっかり応答できる撮影スタッフも素晴らしい。
撮影現場のエネルギーとか活気、調和みたいなものが良い意味で作品に乗り移っているだろう。だから人気が落ちず、長く作り続けられるのだと思う。お金もたくさん、人もたくさん動いているからこそできる芸当なのだろうが、そこも含めて、「アメリカってすげぇ国だな」って改めて思う。正直、その中に交じって働いてみたかった。羨ましい。

CHICAGO FIRE
It’s about time I wrote about Chicago Fire. It’s a foreign drama that I’m really into right now. It’s a drama series produced in the U.S. Amazon Prime has season 7, but I heard that season 10 is currently airing there. I did some research and found out that they have decided to produce up to season 11. There is no doubt that it is a very popular series that has been running for this long.
There are no dragons, robots, wizards, or anything fictional in the show, and for the first time in a long time, I am enjoying live action images to the fullest. Since this is a story about firefighters, there are many scenes of fires and explosions, and although I’m sure they used compositing techniques, most of the material looks like it was actually shot and edited. Perhaps it’s because my eyes have become so accustomed to CG and other processed images that I find the raw footage quite refreshing. Live action is still good. The fierce scenes of fires and traffic accidents that appear in every episode are very realistic and powerful, and the filming seems to have been carefully prepared down to the last detail. The teamwork of the firefighters is always shown in the drama, but I think the teamwork of the production crew is no less impressive. The fact that more than 20 episodes are produced in one season with such a large scale of scenes proves this.
I’ve known about “Chicago Fire” for a while, but I couldn’t get into it. I had a preconceived notion that it would be somewhat boring story-wise. A long time ago, there was a movie I loved called “Backdraft” about a firefighter. The slow-motion scene of Kurt Russell rescuing a man from the flames is one of the best scenes in the history of cinema. However, it was good because it was a one-time movie, and I was skeptical that it would get stuck in a rut in a series of dramas. I didn’t think there were that many variations in fires, and the fact that fires occurred every week seemed like a forced setup. Maybe it’s because I live in Japan, where fires don’t happen that often. To be honest, my image of firefighters in Japan is based on the assumption that they must have a lot of free time.
I’m currently watching the middle part of season 3. The story revolves around a few main cast members who are mainly in their 30s, and there are some aspects that are a little difficult for me to understand, such as the way they treat each other and the way their relationships with men and women are entangled. However, I think the scriptwriter is excellent. The way the story unfolds throughout the series is nothing short of brilliant. The cinematographers are also excellent in responding to the excellence of the book.
The energy, vitality, and harmony of the film crew must have been transferred to the film in a good way. I think that’s why the popularity of the film has not declined, and why it can continue to be made for a long time. This is probably because there is a lot of money and a lot of people working there, and that and other factors make me think once again, “America is an amazing country. To be honest, I wish I could have worked among them. I envy them.
