写真を撮ろうとするときに私が一番気をつけることは手ブレ。私はプロのカメラマンではないが、頻繁にスチール写真を撮る機会がある。誰からも撮影を強いられているわけではなく、私が管理しているホームページのクオリティを上げたいがために自発的に撮影しているのだ。一応一眼レフカメラを使って、素人ながら我流で頑張って撮っている。

　被写体は動いている人間の場合ばかりで、ゆっくり三脚を使って準備している時間がなく、ほぼ100％手持ちで撮影している。私は手ブレが恐いので少しでもカメラを安定させるために、脇を締めたり肘をその辺に当てて固定したりして、とにかく少しでもシャッタースピードに貢献できるように努めている。
　撮影した写真はホームページで使用することがほとんどで、私のページには一般的な横長の写真の方が収まりが良く、使い勝手が良い。だから99％は普通に横長で撮るのだが、稀にシチュエーションによって人間の全身など、縦長の画角で撮らざるを得ない場合がある。カメラを90°回転させシャッターを押すのだ。
　シャッターは右手の人差し指で押せるように、カメラの右側上についている。縦長写真を撮ろうと90°傾ける際、左回りでカメラを回転させてしまうと右肘が上がり、姿勢が安定しない。だから必ず右回りでシャッターが下にくるように回転させる。私にとっては当たり前の習慣だ。そうするとこちらの方がむしろ普段より安定するのではないかと思うくらい、カメラの重量を感じなくなる。つまりブレなくなる。理由はよく分からないが、カメラを下から支えるような持ち方になるからかもしれない。

　先日、「これであなたも一流ブロガー！」のような、ハウツーもののインターネット広告を目にした。恐らく写真の撮影も文章を書くことも、もしかしたらあまりデジタル関連に明るくない人たちも含めた、「初心者」への訴求を目指したチラシなのかもしれない。そこには一人の女性が縦長の写真を撮ろうと一眼レフカメラを縦にして構えている様子を正面から撮った写真が使われていた。私が驚いたのは、その女性の右肘が上がった向きでカメラを回転させていたことだった。
　その写真はキレイにしっかり撮られていたように見えたので、確信はないが、プロのカメラマンが撮っていると思う。だとすると、撮影するときにモデルの右肘が上がっている姿勢がおかしいことには気づくはずだ。ということは、いかにもカメラに馴染んでいない素人っぽさを出すために、わざとおかしい姿勢で撮ったのではないかと勘ぐりたくなってしまう。そこで私が分からないのは、その姿勢の違和感に気づくのはある程度経験のある人たちなのであって、ターゲットである素人の人たちは気づかないのではないかと推測する。気づかないからどちらでも構わないと言えばそうなのかもしれないが、どこを切り取っても中途半端な広告に思えて、何だか釈然としない気持ちになった。まぁ、こういう私みたいな人間を「面倒くさいおじさん」と呼ぶのだろう。

　最近はスマホのカメラも非常に高性能でキレイな写真が撮れる。私なんかが無理して一眼レフを振り回すより、もしかしたらスマホで撮った方が効率的なのかもしれない。タブレットをうまく操って撮っている人もいるようだ。
　素人さんが何でも気軽にできる世の中になってきた。まぶた周りに何重もの皺を寄せて片眼をつぶり、開いた方の目をファインダーに押しつけながら必死に被写体を追いかけ回すようなスタイルは、もう流行らないのかもしれない。

　あ～、やっぱり素人がスマホで撮った写真なのかもねー

Shaky

　One of my biggest concerns when trying to take pictures is camera shake. I’m not a professional photographer, but I frequently have the opportunity to take still photos. I am not forced by anyone to take pictures, but I do it voluntarily to improve the quality of the website I manage. I use a single-lens reflex camera and try my best to take pictures as an amateur.

　The subject is always a moving person, so I don’t have time to set up a tripod, that’s why I shoot almost 100% handheld. I am afraid of camera shake, so I try to stabilize the camera as much as possible by tightening my arms and holding my elbows against the ground to contribute to the shutter speed as much as possible.
　Most of the photos I take are used on my website, and for my page, a typical horizontal photo fits better and is more usable. That’s why 99% of the time I shoot in landscape mode, but there are rare situations where I have to shoot in portrait mode, such as a full body shot. I turn the camera 90 degrees and press the shutter.
　The shutter is located on the upper right side of the camera so that it can be pressed with the index finger of the right hand. When you tilt the camera 90 degrees to take a portrait picture, if you rotate the camera to the left, your right elbow will be raised and your posture will not be stable. So I always rotate the camera clockwise so that the shutter is at the bottom. This is a natural habit for me. When I do this, I don’t feel the weight of the camera so much that I think I am more stable than usual. In other words, I don’t get shaky. I don’t know why, but it may be because I hold the camera as if I am supporting it from below.

　The other day, I saw an Internet advertisement for a how-to guide called “Now You’re a First-Class Blogger! Perhaps it was a flyer aiming to appeal to “beginners”, including those who are not very familiar with photography, writing, or maybe even digital-related things. It featured a frontal shot of a woman holding an SLR camera vertically in order to take a vertical shot. What surprised me was that the woman was rotating the camera with her right elbow in the upright position.
　The picture looked clean and well taken, so I’m not sure, but I think it was taken by a professional photographer. If that were the case, I would have noticed that the model’s right elbow was raised in a strange position when she was being photographed. This makes me wonder if the photographer intentionally used a strange posture in order to make the photo look amateurish and unfamiliar with the camera. What I don’t understand is why people with a certain amount of experience would notice the uncomfortable posture, while the target audience of amateurs would not. It may be true to say that it doesn’t matter either way because they don’t notice it, but it seemed like a half-hearted advertisement no matter which part of it I cut out, and it left me with a feeling of incomprehension. Well, I guess people like me are called “troublesome uncles”.

　These days, smartphone cameras are very sophisticated and can take beautiful pictures. Perhaps it would be more efficient for me to take pictures with my smartphone rather than forcing myself to wield a single-lens reflex camera. Some people seem to be taking pictures by manipulating their tablets.
　We live in a world where amateurs can do anything they want with ease. The style of frantically chasing after a subject with one eye closed and the other open, pressing against the viewfinder, with multiple wrinkles around the eyelid, may no longer be in vogue.

　Ahhh, maybe it’s just a photo taken by an amateur with a smartphone after all!
