日本語の一つの特徴として、主語を省略する傾向があるようだ。そう言われればというくらいで、書くにしろ話すにしろ、私としては主語の欠落をそれほど気にすることはほとんどなかった。反対に文章の頭に「私は」と付けてしまうと、ともするとほとんどの文章の冒頭が「私は」から始まってしまい、読む人に幼稚な印象を与えてしまう恐れを感じる。子供が書いたような文章だと思われることは、やはり避けたい。

　そこへいくと英語は主語述語目的語などが明確に揃っていて、聞き手が理解しやすいのだという。「本当にそうか！？」と勘ぐりたい心境だが、言語技術を説く講師の先生が言うのだから、そうなのだろう。私にはその説を否定する知識は備わっていない。
　心当たりが無いわけでもない。今年に入ってからDeepLさんが提供している自動翻訳システムを介してこのブログを英訳している。非常に良くできたシステムで、スピードも速いしとても重宝している。ただ排出された英文を確認していると、時々私が意図していた主語が使われていないことがある。
　元の私が書いた日本文を確認すると、英訳する立場で見れば、確かに「私」なのか一般的な意味合いの「They」や「We」なのか等、主語が分かりづらい表現であることが分かる。しかし日本文の方に主語を付けてみると野暮ったさを感じる。一番良いのは英訳にかける時にだけ主語を加えて、アップするときに外せば良いのだろうが、色々やっていると忘れてしまい、結局は“野暮ったい”ままアップしてしまう羽目になる。思い出したときにはもうどの場所だったか忘れてしまっている。

　そんなことをしていると、つくづく言語は難しいなと感じる。母国語の日本語だけでもこれほど苦労しているのに、外国語で思いや考えを表現しようとすれば時間も労力もそれなりにかかり、今更ながらそれは大変な作業になる。DeepLさんのこの優れた英訳性能に出会わなければ、やらなかったと思う。下手な訳文を載せてしまっては、恐らく私の意図がうまく伝わらず、逆効果になるだろうから。言語の違いという壁がいよいよ低くなってきた時代の到来を示す一つの証拠かもしれない。以前の翻訳システムよりは格段に良くなっている。

　日本語と英語の特徴を掴むためには、改めてのその種の勉強が必要な様相を呈してきた。しかしそこを突き詰めていくモチベーションと余裕は今の私にはない。今くらいの言語力のまま執筆の方に重心を置き、何とか継続に努めていきたいと思う。けれども今回のように、他の勉強をした副産物として言語についての理解が少しでも深められれば、それはいつでも大歓迎だ。現実の行動を通して問題に突き当たる経験は貴重であり、そこで得られる学びは力になる。
　いくつになっても己の心構え次第で、無数に転がっている学びの機会に気が付くことができると思う。歳を取って心は頑なになりがちだが、そこはやはりスポンジのような吸収力を保って進みたい。永遠の新人のように。
