[The chicken comes first or the egg comes last]

Whether the chicken comes first or the egg comes last

I watched the movie “Pre-Destination” on Amazon Prime. I was drawn in by the gradual unraveling of secrets as the film progressed. It is a so-called “time machine” story, and I recommend it to those who love science fiction. The book is excellent and very interesting.

As is often the case with “time machine stories,” the story unfolds as the main character travels through time and space, going back to the past and back to the future. The main character’s mission as a time traveler is to preserve history. By “correctly” interacting with the people of the time period he visits, he strives to ensure that the future will proceed as planned. So far, the story unfolds in the same way as in other films, so there is no need to mention anything special about it. What makes this film different, however, is that the protagonist actively engages with his or her past and future selves, something that has been considered taboo until now.

The process from a person’s “birth” to “death” is a one-way street in terms of time axis. It would be a little complicated if it were not so. To put it simply, this film is “complicated” in that sense. I no longer know at what point fate, or rather the beginning of the protagonist’s life, took place.
In one scene, the main character says “sex” in response to the question “chicken first or egg first,” a question that everyone seems to be talking about everywhere. For a moment I thought, “I see! But only in this film, even this sex theory becomes less credible. No matter how much I try to think logically, I cannot find the answer, as if I am caught in an “endless loop” that leads to eternity. My ability to identify the starting point of the protagonist’s destiny seems difficult.

Although I cannot determine the starting point, the “death” point was the only point that was clearly expressed, albeit in a complicated way. I felt that this was the creator’s way of summarizing this story and “life” by saying, “Although many things happen in life, the fact that ‘we will surely die someday’ is unshakable.
I started to write this article with the understanding that it would be a “spoiler” for those who had not seen the film, but when I finished it and read it again, I found that the contents were so unclear that it was not even a spoiler. On the contrary, I am relieved. If you read this text again after you have seen the film, I wonder if you will understand a little.

The movie I wanted to spoil after seeing it.
