[Misunderstanding]

Misunderstanding

There is another part of Nakamura Tenpu’s description in his book “I Give You Success” that I would like to mention. He says, “Suppress your feelings of anger and sadness.” I understood this to mean that human beings have feelings of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness, and that we can be happy by suppressing “anger” and “sorrow” as much as possible. I would like to put aside for a moment the idea of suppressing sadness, and today I would like to think a little about suppressing anger.

I consider myself to be an angry person. I get angry easily. If it is a characteristic that cannot be controlled by me in any way, there is still a way out of it, but my problem lies in the fact that somewhere in my mind, I see “expressing anger” as an act equivalent to asserting my own opinions without flattering others. In other words, I had unknowingly come to the conclusion that anger is a good thing. At that time, the words of Tenpu-sensei hit me squarely in the face. He said, “Don’t get angry.
Since I was a child, I was forced to suppress my anger by being told, “Don’t fight,” “Be a kind person,” and so on. That is taken as a natural ‘right answer’ even when I think about it now. At the very least, I wish deep down in my heart to be a kind person. However, when I was young, I felt as if I would be freed from this spell as I grew older. In other words, I was under the illusion that “becoming an adult” meant “gaining the right to be angry. I mistakenly thought that I would no longer have to put up with anything.

I think that no matter what the situation, there is a common understanding that violence is not allowed. It is what is called “don’t lay a hand on them. You must not use your strength to intimidate others, take things away from them, or actually injure them. If you do, you will be punished under the law. It is not just a matter of law, but common sense that it is not allowed.
What about verbal abuse? Is verbal abuse in anger allowed because it does not violate the law? I am not familiar with the law, so I don’t know the details, but I would say that verbal abuse is also unacceptable. Slander and slander sometimes have such destructive power that they can take a person’s life. If you think about it calmly, you can understand this. However, for a long time, I have accepted the “mistake” that it is “okay to be angry. Neither forceful violence nor verbal violence should be used.

The simple yet powerful message, “Don’t get angry,” made me feel as if I had been hit in the back of the head with a blunt instrument. Anger breeds anger.” I had forgotten such a simple thing. I will try not to be angry from now on, but in reality it will not be that easy to do so. I’ve let my anger go for too long, and I’ve grown accustomed to being angry. I think the rejection is quite strong.
But there is certainly a part of me that really wants to agree with Tenpu-sensei, not just theoretically. I feel that not getting angry is truly the right thing to do. What the heck!” The one clue to living life was in such a simple place!” I feel the ‘realization’ that I am fiercely aware of. If I can do it well, my life may change one more thing.

Starting tomorrow, I will not be angry.
