[Specialization and Spirituality]

Specialization and Spirituality

Until about 10 years ago, when asked, “What is your specialty?” I used to answer, a little jokingly, “Sports. Until my 20s, I really enjoyed watching sports, mainly American professional sports (basketball, American football, MLB), but also soccer, judo, rugby, volleyball, alpine skiing, F-1, and many others. I was so excited to watch the Olympics as if I were competing in them. I was so excited to watch the Olympics that I thought I might even get a job in the sports industry. I was already an adult, and I even thought to myself, “This love of sports is real.

When asked, “What is your specialty?” I guess I should answer that, since I majored in “psychology” in college, but I am not sure, or I have never said so. Because I can’t say with pride that I studied psychology. In fact, I’ve already forgotten what I know about psychology, and I can say that I know very little about it. There is an image that “specialty” = an area of expertise to which I can answer any question, and I also seem to be inclined to hide the fact that I studied psychology, which I always deceive myself about. I had a fair amount of confidence that I could answer most questions about sports, whether they were about the rules or recent topics, and so I answered.

The power of sports to captivate my mind was immense for me. Watching sports, I could forget about the real world and immerse myself in their world. I did not feel that I was escaping to that extent, but perhaps it was an excellent escape to turn my eyes away from reality.
I subscribed to a sports newspaper and started my day by reading every article from cover to cover every morning. I really disliked the winter months when sports topics were scarce and newspapers were uninteresting. There was another “boring” episode that I still remember clearly: when I was living in Canada in my late twenties, I lived alone in an apartment for a time for various reasons. During the worst of that time, I watched four American football games live on one Sunday. From the time I woke up to the time I went to bed, I probably watched for more than 15 hours. I remember that I got bored and sick of it and thought that I could not continue to live like this.

Yesterday, the World Swimming Championships were on TV. I heard it was being held in Hungary. In the past, I would have been bitten by the TV to watch it, but yesterday I realized that I had really lost interest in it. I simply missed it.
At all times in my life, I seem to have lived my life looking for some place where my heart could be found. It is probably not a place that someone tells me to go or prompts me to go. It must be something to which I am naturally drawn, or my heart will not be at peace. My “stronghold” has shifted at each milestone in my life. I am now looking to God and Jesus for my “stronghold,” but that may change in the future. I want to maintain an attitude of not being afraid of change and listening to the voice of my heart.

Four games a day was indeed too much to watch.
