[A ray of light in the night sky, a batted ball]

A ray of light in the night sky, a batted ball

On August 13, 1982, I was with my family watching a professional baseball game at Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo. The game was between the Giants and Hanshin. It was a traditional game. I was in the third year of junior high school, preparing to take the high school entrance exam the following spring, and my father wanted to show me the baseball game that I loved so much, an official game on the highest stage in Japan, because he knew I would be busy studying for the exam. I think that my father wanted to see the game personally, but in the end, he did it for my sake, and I remember that I was very happy. I may have been even more thrilled because my father had not done anything special for me in the past.

It was probably the first time I had ever seen a proper “night game. I don’t remember it so clearly anymore, but I have an image that the spectator seats were dark and subdued, and the ground and the players were illuminated very brightly. It was like a “huge stage” set up outdoors. I felt as if I were in a dream, as if I were not on the ground, and I was in a daze. I couldn’t believe that star players I had only seen on TV were playing right there in front of me.

Still, even though I was in the third grade there, I was familiar with baseball itself, and once the game started, my mind went into the play. I was a Giants fan, so I was rooting for the Giants, but the Hanshin players were dynamic that day. The starter for the Giants was their ace pitcher, Sguru Egawa. I think he was so successful that he could be called Japan’s leading pitcher at the time. He had reached his peak as a player.
However, on the day of the game, things were looking bleak. The Hanshin starter, Fujiwara, was a nearly unknown player, but he surprisingly shut down the Giants lineup, while the Hanshin batting line gradually chased down Egawa. For me, it was a nightmarish development. I had come all the way from the countryside for this game, and all I could do was watch as the team I was rooting for lost before my eyes.
It was Masayuki Kakefu, the star of the Hanshin team, who put the finishing touches on the Giants. I was watching the game from the third base infield bleachers. The big fly balls hit by each batter, including the home run, were sliced or faded and bent as they approached their landing spots, but Kakefu’s left-handed batter, which caught Egawa’s straight ball dead center, went straight into the right field stands with a dry and pleasant sound. I could not help but stare at the beautiful afterimage of the straight line left by the batted ball. I remember that my frustration at the Giants about to lose was blown away at that moment.

The shocking memories of my youth will stay with me for a long time. That may be the case when it is your “first time” in anything you do. Even after all this time, I still think it is invaluable to have various experiences when you are young. Sitting at a desk in a school classroom and studying is not the only way to learn. I hope that children have many opportunities to see, feel, and experience various things. I hope that many of the adults surrounding them are aware of this.

Isn’t it precious that I actually saw the home run that Kakefu hit off Egawa?
