[Troublesome Person]

Troublesome Person

The moments in my life when I feel happiest are when I realize that I have helped someone. For example, when I volunteer and receive a thank-you note for my work, or when I am able to help bring a smile to someone’s face, I am truly happy. At my age, I am finally starting to feel a strong desire to be of service to my family and friends. It may sound like someone else’s problem, but I guess I am finally becoming aware of what brings me joy.

But my main concern is myself. If I want to help others, I should direct my attention to others to increase the probability of getting more pleasure, but my attention is always directed to myself. What I am most interested in is the content of my mind.
Perhaps that means being self-centered. I can see that in the way I cling to my own mind first and foremost, and I nod in agreement. But if I do not try to understand myself, what else can I understand? I am the source of understanding, and if I do not have a proper grasp of what I am, my judgment of anything else will be shaken.
In reality, I am not interested in myself in such a logical way. The truth is that I am irresistibly attracted to myself. However, in order to understand the world more deeply, I think it is necessary to first explore the question, “What do I think about myself?

I am the person who is most interested in myself, but even when something good happens to me, I do not feel happy at all. I don’t know if I am too hard on myself or what, but strangely, my heart does not react at all. If I were to discover something, like, “Oh, that’s the kind of person I am,” that would be a very gratifying event, but I don’t feel happy at all. ……
But I am more often depressed when I discover who I really am. The more I get to know myself, the more I am repeatedly disappointed in myself. It is as if I am on a journey of self-discovery in order to suffer, and I am really the most troublesome person to me. Perhaps that is why I am forever interested in it.

My mentor once told me, “You can only know others as deeply as you know yourself. If this is true, then I am training myself to know others at the same time as I am trying to know myself. I am a little pleased that I am doing this naturally and without intending to. For the first time in a long time, I can be happy about myself. I can only hope that this will lead me to do more and more to help others.
I hate people who are self-centered. That means I hate myself. Yes, I am a self-centered person. Instead of lamenting my likes and dislikes, I would like to accept that fact with sincerity and think, “Well, then, what should I do from there? I tend to make judgments about everything based on my emotions, but I would like to cultivate a way of looking at myself objectively based on facts. If I do this, the day will come when I can feel more joy when I am able to accomplish something.

 I don’t want to admit that I’m self-centered, though.
