[The Melancholy of Occupational Choice]

The Melancholy of Occupational Choice

Even now, there are times when I suddenly think to myself. “Maybe I should have been a school teacher?” I sometimes wonder if I might have had an aptitude for the teaching profession. When I was deciding where to go to school in high school, I did indeed explore the possibility of becoming a teacher. However, I decided at the time that “I couldn’t do it,” and gave up the idea.
One of the main reasons for that decision was my homeroom teacher in high school. That teacher, with whom I still have a relationship, was then and still is a great person to me, and I respect him with all my heart. He had a tremendous influence on me when I was in high school, and I thought at the time, “No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to be this person. In other words, I decided that I was not qualified to become a teacher until I had acquired enough human depth to rival, if not surpass, my mentor. Yes, the reason for my abandonment was not in the teacher, but in my heart.

I am the type of person who has a very strong sense of normality. Once I have formed a set of rules, such as “this is the way it should be, this is the way it must be,” I tend to deny those who do not conform to them. In other words, if I had become a teacher, there was a possibility that I might have become a teacher who would bind students in the name of that code. It is an unimportant imagination now, but I would have suffered for it, so I think it is probably a good thing that I did not become a teacher after all. However, I feel that I may have had the aptitude to be a teacher in total, including such characteristics. I can’t really describe that feeling here.
To become a teacher, I did not have to be like my former teacher. I unconditionally followed the code I had set for myself, “You have to be like your teacher to be qualified.” My teacher is my teacher and I am me. I should have gone my own way, but in the end, I think I could not escape from the strong influence he had on me. I guess you could say that I have chosen to escape from the shadow of my mentor. I think it means that I have been aware of the great influence he had on me but refused to acknowledge it, in other words, I was unable to become independent from him for a long time.

I gave up on becoming a teacher because I thought that I could never become my mentor, but even if this was true on the surface, I think that deep down in my heart I had not given up on becoming my mentor. Or you could say that I was trying to catch up with my mentor. I was saying with my mouth that there was no way I could become a mentor, but in my stomach I was planning to do the exact opposite, which I think is a clever and twisted way that is very typical of me. I have been reminded of this “sarcasm,” which is my true nature, quite often lately.
At a Bible study group led by my former teacher, I confessed to him, knowing that he would be furious with me. Assuming for certain that he would be furious, I said to him, “I try to read and think about the Bible by replacing Jesus with you in order to understand Jesus. Then the teacher said, “God uses me, such a helpless person, for something so important. I cried. I can’t explain it well, but I think that was the moment I became independent from my former teacher. It was the day, more than 35 years after I graduated from high school.

I don’t know if I would have been better off as a teacher, and I’m past that. I will not pursue teaching in the future. But even if I cannot “educate,” I believe that I can live and learn together with various people, not only children. The school is not the only place where I can pass on the blessings I have received from my mentors.

You never know how life will turn out.
