カッコいいおっさん[Cool Old Man]

Cool Old Man

I believe that there are times when some “phrase” supports people’s hearts and minds, such as one’s motto, a word from the Bible, or a so-called “memorable word”. I have my own memorable phrases, but I cannot say that they always make a strong enough impression on me to be remembered. I have considered trying to decide on a motto for myself, but I feel that none of them are definitive, so I have been hesitant about it.
Especially these days, I try to read as much as possible and write as much as I can. It seems strange to me that I can’t seem to grasp any particular phrase, even though I have a close relationship with words, as if I am composing sentences in my head at all hours of the day. Is that how much I am living sensuously?

It is true that when I was a teenager, I did not read books, but only manga. I also love watching TV and movies, and perhaps I am more familiar with images and video rather than text. It was certainly more often the case that the form that remained in my mind was an image.
I guess it’s something I can’t get back even if I try to get closer to the written word when I’m an adult. It is not necessary to have a cool motto, but it makes me feel intelligent and envious. However, there is no need to force yourself to pick out a motto, and you can simply say, “I don’t have one.

I think it means that I do not remember words that are written word for word without mistakes as if I memorized them. I think it is not so much the words themselves, but the meaning of the words that I somehow perceive, and that often remain in my mind in the form of a lesson or a realization.
Words (dialogues) play an important role in the process of developing a story, leaving a strong impression, such as “the feelings expressed by the characters in that scene in that movie” or “the way that manga develops”. This is especially true for books that have no visual elements. However, what remains in my mind are not specific words, but rather the accumulation of images of “my experiences” that I relived as if I were a character in the story.

In other words, even if I take out a phrase and declare it as my motto, no one will probably understand the true meaning of it unless I also attach my experience behind it and explain it. After all, it is a phrase that represents the spirit I have cherished up to now and the path I intend to take in the future. I do not have the ability to describe my past and future in a few words. And since each person’s experience is unique, each person’s impression of words is also unique, and I don’t want you to think that you understand me with just one word.
However, It is not a motto unless it is expressed in one word, which means that such “cool” phrases are unfortunately not suitable for me. But as I think about it, the frustration of not being able to express myself in one word has faded, and I just feel like, “I’m sorry for being a bothersome old man.

I’m sorry for being a bothersome old man.
