[Five Years Far Away]

Five Years Far Away

Every day I sit at the computer and think about what I am going to write about. It is really a toss-up whether or not a story will come to me, and on days when it doesn’t, I sometimes give up and go to sleep. I have an extra day’s worth of writing, so I can get by. Especially on days when I am hopelessly tired from work, I don’t even resist. It takes a certain amount of strength and concentration to write this, and even if I try hard, it will never turn into a good piece of writing. I feel bad if I do not finish my writing to a minimum quality that I am satisfied with, even though I cannot get rid of the poor impression I have of it. If such a state of affairs continues for days, I am prepared to judge that I have reached my limit and discontinue the serialization.

I have managed to write every day in this way for almost two full years now. Today’s post will be the 711th. I have long run out of material, and I tend to write about the same things with slightly different expressions, but I think that’s OK. For me, it is a fresh feeling that I feel again on a particular day. If the content is the same, it means that no change has occurred in my thoughts from the last time to that day. It can be a confirmation of something I still value, or it can be a record of the process of change in my thoughts and feelings. Either way, it is a valuable document for me.

I would like to see the two-year mark as a mere passing point. After all, every day was hard work, and it was a little depressing to think that it would still continue. However, when I think about what would happen if I were to stop, I am afraid that I would lose my mental support. I would be ruined. It is not a very healthy motivation, but anyway, I feel that it is better for me not to stop now.

As I have written before, I have heard that there is a kind of Chinese saying, “If you write a diary every day for five years, you have accomplished one thing by doing so. I haven’t followed up to find out who said that, or what actually happened to the person who achieved it, but those words alone are enough for me. It is up to me whether I believe it or not, and I don’t care if it is a lie.
After two years of doing this, I am acutely aware of the length of time that five years is. I may lose my mind because I can’t find anything to write about, or I may not be able to write because of some incident or accident. I don’t intend to push myself too hard, and I probably won’t be able to push myself any further, both physically and mentally. I am not sure how long I will be able to continue.
So I will not say, “I will work hard for three more years and achieve the goal of writing without missing a day for five years. I don’t want to look for excuses when I can’t do it. It’s better to say, “I’ll work as hard as I can,” so that when that day comes, I won’t be hurt. If you say that not declaring is because I am not prepared to do so, I can’t deny that. However, if I do stop halfway through, I can’t just end up fooling myself with lame excuses. That’s how important this blog is to me now.

Five years is a long time. ……
