私たちはついつい物事を自分たち本位で考えてしまう。常識という大看板を振りかざして正論を貫こうとする。しかし私たちが誰にとっても当たり前だと信じ込んでいるその「常識」は、一体何に基づいて考えられた概念だろうか。その根本にある発想は、万国、万物を通じて共有しうる思想だろうか。
　私は何かを考えようとするとき、いつもこの問題に突き当たる。人種や国籍、性別や宗教等々の違いを超えて、世界が納得して共有できる考え方とは一体何だろう。そもそもそんなものが、この世に存在するのだろうか。

　人間の考え方はそれぞれだ。だから例えばウクライナに侵攻しているロシアの人々の考え方を私が理解できなくても、それはそれで当然のことなのかもしれない。或いはイスラム原理主義に則って活動している人たちや、社会主義国と呼ばれている国々、また軍部が政治の中枢を統制している国などの振る舞いに違和感を覚えるのも、私が日本という国に生まれ育ったからに他ならない。そういった「違い」を超えて人類は本当に仲良くできるのだろうか。見通しは決して明るくないように感じられる。

　昨日のニュースを観ていると、中国で、政府の厳重なコロナ感染拡大防止対策に反対する、民衆の抗議デモが起こっているという内容が伝えられていた。中国からはそういった市民運動に関するニュースはあまり聞こえてこないので、珍しいなと思っていた。「よっぽど規制が厳しいんだろうな」くらいにしか感じていなかった。
　ところがニュース解説を聞いていると、このデモ活動は中国の人たちがサッカーのワールドカップの様子をテレビで観たことが理由で起きたのだろうということだった。世界中のサッカーファンがカタールへ大挙して詰めかけ、自国チームの奮闘に一喜一憂、狂喜乱舞する姿が大写しで世界中へ連日伝えられている。見たところ画面の中にマスクをして応援している人は見つけられない。まさにコロナの脅威を乗り越えて、人生を謳歌している世界中から集まった人々の様子が、中国の人々の心に火を付けた形だろうか。あの何万人という観衆がひしめき合いながら、高揚したり落胆したりしている光景は、同じこの地球上で、今現実に起きていることなのだ。

　今回のワールドカップはフィールド上の選手たちによって、いくつかの政治的な意思表示がなされ、話題になっている。自国の国家斉唱時に口を固く結んだり、キックオフ直前に全員が右膝を地面につけて人種差別への反対意志を示したり、先発メンバーの写真撮影時に、それぞれが自分の口を手で隠すポーズを取ることで表現の自由への圧力に抗議したり。またそういった中でも、普段は政治的に敵対している国同士が対戦し、試合中のラフプレーも一切なく、試合後に抱き合って健闘をたたえ合っていた姿は、極めて感動的だった。あれを見て、感極まったのは私だけではないはずだ。
　違いを乗り越えることは甚だ難しいことだと思う。それは歴史が証明してしまっている。しかし今回のこのワールドカップというスポーツの祭典で、かつては無かったような政治色の強い出来事が内側から起き、それに呼応するような動きが外側で見られている。思想や戒律を超えて人類が融合できるヒントが、今回あったような気がするのだが。

Sports and Politics

　We tend to think things in our own way. We try to maintain a correct opinion by waving a big billboard called “common sense. However, what is the basis of this “common sense” that we have come to believe is natural to everyone? Is the underlying idea a concept that can be shared by all nations and all things?
　Whenever I try to think about something, I am confronted with this question. What exactly is a way of thinking that can be shared by the world in a way that transcends differences in race, nationality, gender, religion, and so on? In the first place, does such a thing exist in this world?

　People have different ways of thinking. So, for example, it may be natural for me not to understand the way of thinking of the Russian people who are invading Ukraine. Or I may feel uncomfortable with the behavior of people who follow Islamic fundamentalism, socialist countries, or countries where the military controls the political center, because I was born and raised in Japan. I wonder if we can really get along with each other beyond such “differences. The outlook does not seem bright at all.

　Watching the news yesterday, I heard about the public protests in China against the government’s strict measures to prevent the spread of corona infection. I thought this was unusual because we don’t hear much news about such civil movements from China, and thought, “They must be very restrictive.
　However, listening to the news commentary, I learned that the demonstrations were probably caused by Chinese people watching the World Cup soccer tournament on TV. Soccer fans from all over the world were flocking to Qatar in droves, and the images of their joys and sorrows over their country’s team’s successes were being broadcasted to the world on a daily basis. I couldn’t find anyone wearing a mask cheering for the team on screen. It seems that the people from all over the world who have overcome the threat of Corona and are enjoying their lives have ignited the hearts of the Chinese people. The sight of tens of thousands of spectators thronging together, elated and despondent, is a reality that is happening right now on this very same planet.

　This World Cup has become a hot topic because of several political statements made by the players on the field. They may tie their mouths tightly during their own national anthems, or they have shown their opposition to racial discrimination by all putting their right knee on the ground just before kickoff, or by each covering their mouths with their hands when posing for a photo of the starting lineup to protest the pressure on freedom of expression. And even in the midst of all this, it was extremely moving to see the normally politically hostile countries playing each other, with no rough play during the game, and hugging each other after the match to praise each other for a good fight. I am sure I was not the only one who was moved to tears when I saw that.
　I think it is extremely difficult to overcome differences. History has proven that. However, in this World Cup, a sporting festival, events with strong political overtones that never existed before are occurring from within, and movements are being seen on the outside that seem to respond to these events. It seems to me that there were hints this time that humanity can unite beyond ideology and precepts.

　I want to be a part of creating peace.
