私はサッカーを観るのが小さな頃から大好きで、現在中東のカタールで行われているワールドカップサッカーを当然のように夢中で観ている。今大会では我らが日本代表チームが快進撃を続けており、彼らが活躍する様子に胸躍らせ、心から応援している真っ只中だ。私は日本代表チームの動向に注視したいがために、本当に仕事が手に付かないほど、テレビ・インターネットをはじめ、あらゆる情報を入手しようと躍起になっている。サッカーを通して多くの人と結ばれているような気もして、とても幸せな毎日だ。

　私が勝手に有頂天になるのは良いが、この日本チームの勝利に湧く歓喜の雰囲気に包まれる傍らで、全くサッカーというものに興味がない人たちがいる。サッカーに興味がないというよりも、日本を代表するスポーツチームが勝ち星を挙げることに、それが世界大会であろうが何だろうが、全く関心がない人たちがいる。もしくは、「にわかナショナリズム」と呼ぶのだそうだが、普段は日本のことを一つの集団として考えようともしない人々が、こういう時だけ「日本、日本」と急に愛国心を訴えるような様子に違和感を覚える人たちもいる。
　つまり私が今日言いたいのは、どんなに多くの人々がサッカーに熱狂しようとも、その現象自体を好ましくないと思っている人たちも、意外にたくさんいるということだ。自分が熱中しているからと言って、他の人もそうだとは限らない。当たり前のことだが、興奮状態にいると、なかなか配慮できなくなってしまう。ある人が「サッカーに興味がない人に会うとホッとする」と言っていた。配慮の無さに気づかされて、何だかたまらなく申し訳ない気持ちになってしまった。

　もっと言うと、勝敗がついた時、私は勝者の方に目を向かわせがちだが、敗者の気持ちに寄り添うことの方が大切だと考える人たちがいる。勝者が嬉しい分だけ反対に、いやそれ以上に深く、敗者は失望しているかもしれない。私が信じているキリスト教の信者の方にそういう人が多いように感じている。勝ち負けの判定が出てしまうこと自体を嫌う人たちがいるということだ。そもそも争う必要など無いと考えているのかもしれない。平和を切望している私からすると、間違いを正されてしまったようで、言葉を失ってしまう。確かに争いは必要ない。

　私を含めて、勝負事が好きな人たちがいることは間違いない。ワールドカップ中継で映し出される、観客が熱狂しているあの様子を観ていれば、それは明白だと思う。私個人的には平和的なこういったスポーツの祭典は、確かに争い事ではあるけれども、開催を続けて欲しい。私のポリシーに矛盾しているかもしれないが、その気持ちを今は偽ることはできない。
　代理戦争ではないが、そんなに戦争がしたいなら、こういった平和的なスポーツという競技を通して、国同士なり争えばいいのにとさえ思う。乱暴な考え方かもしれないが、いろいろな問題を解決する一つのヒントにはなるのではないか。人の命を奪ってまで手に入れなければならない物なんて、ない。

Beside the Frenzy

　I have loved watching soccer since I was a small child, and I am naturally fascinated by the World Cup soccer games currently being played in Qatar in the Middle East. I am in the midst of cheering on Japan’s national team as they continue to make great strides in this tournament, and I am thrilled to see them in action. I am so eager to follow the progress of the national team that I am so busy with my work that I am trying to get all kinds of information on TV, Internet, and other media. I feel as if I am connected to many people through soccer, and I am very happy every day.

　It is fine for me to be elated on my own, but in the midst of the jubilant atmosphere that surrounds the victory of the Japanese team, there are people who are not interested in soccer at all. It is not so much that they are not interested in soccer, but rather that they are not at all interested in a victory by Japan’s representative sports team, whether it is in a world tournament or not. Or there are those who feel uncomfortable with the sudden patriotic appeal for “Japan, Japan” only at times like these by people who normally do not even think of Japan as a group, which they call “ill-informed nationalism.
　What I am trying to say today is that no matter how many people are crazy about soccer, there are a surprisingly large number of people who do not like the phenomenon itself. Just because you are passionate about soccer does not mean that others are too. It is natural, but when you are in a state of excitement, it is hard to be considerate. Someone once told me, “I feel relieved when I meet people who are not interested in soccer. I was made aware of my lack of consideration, and I felt somewhat irresistibly sorry.

　More to the point, when there are winners and losers, I tend to turn my attention to the winners, but there are those who believe that it is more important to be close to the feelings of the losers. As happy as the winner is, the loser may be disappointed in the opposite, or even deeper, way. I have a feeling that many of the Christian believers I believe in are like that. It means that there are people who dislike the very fact that there is a decision to be made about who wins or loses. They may think there is no need to fight in the first place. As someone who longs for peace, I feel as if I have been corrected, and I am at a loss for words. Certainly there is no need for conflict.

　No doubt there are people, including myself, who like to compete. I think that is obvious if you watch those scenes shown on the World Cup broadcasts, where the spectators are in a frenzy. Personally, I would like to see these peaceful sports festivals continue to be held, even though they are certainly contentious. It may contradict my policy, but I can’t disguise that feeling right now.
　It is not a war by proxy, but if you want war so badly, why not have nations fight each other through peaceful sporting events like this? It may be a wild idea, but it may be a clue to solving various problems. Nothing is worth taking a life to get.
