once-in-a-lifetime encounter

I saw a play in which a friend of mine was an actor. It was a play by a theater company made up of amateurs, so it was not top quality acting, but it was still good to see a live performance by a real live person right there in the audience. I love foreign movies and TV dramas, which I often watch, but unlike those videos that I can watch at home as many times as I want, a play gives me the impression of a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, and the actors’ live movements and lines jump directly into my heart, not through a machine. One of my acquaintances was not in the show for a very long time, but she had relatively long lines and performed her role admirably. I’ve seen the show many times already, but I still get nervous every time. I was relieved that it ended well this time, too.

The other day, I watched a documentary program about Broadway musicals of the past and present. One of the words that left an impression on me was, “After a show is over, some kind of relationship is formed between the performers and the audience, who have never met before.
Perhaps, for the actors, no two performances are exactly the same. For some actors, the quality of their performance improves as they perform more and more, while others gradually lose their sense of urgency and lose their freshness. In any case, the performance of the day is strictly unique, and the actors and the audience share that irreplaceable moment with each other, so it is no wonder that some kind of sense of unity is born.

For more than three years, measures were taken to prevent the spread of coronas, and human interaction was cut off. I think the magnitude of this effect will only become apparent in the future. I am particularly concerned about the impact on children. People refrained from going to work or school and stayed at home to study and work. The good news was that computers, tablets, smartphone apps, and other services were available for telework. I also had study sessions and drinks via ZOOM and was surprised at how much easier it was to use than I had expected. Now that I think about it, I would have missed out on some really important time and opportunities without ZOOM. It was easy and convenient, and the fact that I didn’t have to travel helped me financially in some respects. However, I think it is time to resume the action of actually going to meet the people I want to meet without going through a machine.

Watching the ongoing World Cup soccer tournament, I envy the spectators. Everyone is crying, laughing, and cheering loudly for their home team or their favorite team in a packed and swollen stadium. I know it’s just a once-every-four-years festival, but I was a little impatient to be shown that getting together with a large group of people and having a good time can be so much fun. I think one of the best things in life is to share a good time with a lot of people like that.
I am reminded of the advantages of live performances, as well as plays and musicals, and even sports games. I have been in my stay-home for too long, and there is a part of me that is reluctant to go out to such places, but I think it is sometimes necessary to make an effort to seize opportunities by myself. This is not the time to be lazy.

 Corona, you are almost there.
