此処で[Here]

Here

When I am able to control myself with reason, I see nothing wrong. When reason works, I can be industrious and a good, kind person. But the real me is the lazy, cowardly, selfish, cheating me that is beyond the control of reason. When I try to face this real me, I feel the limits of my power. I try to correct it with reason, but it is toothless.
If I am criticized for not having enough practice, that may be true. I may not be able to change my true self unless I go deep into the mountains around the Himalayas and do some kind of arduous work, such as being dashed by a waterfall for several days. I don’t have the courage or the financial means to do such a thing, but the real me is so formidable that it would take such a life-threatening undertaking to make it happen.

The idea that “one cannot improve oneself without living among people” is one that I have written about many times before, and one that I still hold dear today. When I think about this idea, I feel that it is woven into a precept that contains encouragement: “Don’t run away from people,” no matter how painful they may be. In other words, painful feelings and sad events always occur in the context of our relationship with others, and it is only within this relationship that we can overcome these problems.
Going somewhere secluded and far away to sort out one’s feelings is sometimes effective and may be necessary for mental health. However, it is still “running away,” and I believe that if we keep running away, we will never be able to escape from our problems. We suffer between people, and in the process of trial and error in an attempt to somehow find the light, we become refined. Whether the word “training” is appropriate or not is a question for another time, but training can only be accomplished “here,” not somewhere far away.

Although I am a formidable foe, I must not give up and say, “It can’t be helped because I am out of my depth,” but I must also work on my original lazy and selfish self. If the original me has not changed in the slightest, then no matter how much my rational faculties improve, I have not changed.
And ultimately, and this is still only an intuition, but I think I should try to integrate the “rational me” and the “animal me”. No, I feel that attempt has already begun without my knowledge. I don’t know if that is something I can accomplish. Maybe it is impossible no matter how hard I try. I don’t know, but I feel that the attempt is the meaning of my life.

I think that in order to “integrate,” both sides will have to make concessions. Nothing will happen if we are just stubbornly saying, “I am right, I am superior,” and so on. It is difficult for me, an animalistic and selfish person, to imagine thinking from the other person’s point of view with consideration, but perhaps this is something I must demand of myself.
In any case, my workload as a rational person would be enormous. It is exhausting, painful, and hard work. And it is not worth it because it requires a certain amount of “concession. But if I don’t hold on to my rationality, I will probably collapse. I have no choice but to let it work hard for a while longer. Dreaming of the day when “integration” will come true.

To improve oneself is to try to change oneself.
