以前は、観た映画ですごく気に入ったものがあれば、DVDやプルーレイを購入していつでも観られるようにしていた。トップガンは何度観たか覚えていないほど繰り返し観たし、スター・ウォーズⅠ～ⅥまでのコンプリートBOXを持っていて、これも何度も観ている。一種のコレクションのようなもので、好きな映画タイトルを並べて持っていることは、私の“人間性”を示すような役割を果たしているような気もする。誰かが私の部屋に初めて遊びに来た時に、そのラインナップを見れば私の性格が一目瞭然に分かってしまうようなことがあるかもしれない。
映画だけでなくスポーツも大好きな私は、大きな試合を録画しておく癖がある。特にヨーロッパのサッカーが好きなので、「クラシコ」と呼ばれるスペインで行われる大事な試合は、毎年ブルーレイに保存していた。その他にもアメリカのバスケットボールやアメリカン・フットボールの決勝戦など、保管場所に困るほど大量のディスクメディアがある。
ところが最近は、YouTubeや各種の動画配信サイトが充実してきたため、新しいコンテンツがどんどん視聴できる状況になってきた。映画でもスポーツでも、時間が足りなくて観切れないほどだ。そしてそういったネット上では、最新のものだけではなく、古く懐かしい映像も観られるようになっている。保管してあるディスクを観る必要がすっかりなくなっていった。
私がコレクションを始めた頃は、テレビで放送された番組をVHSビデオで録画して保存していた。あの頃から考えると本当に時代は変わった。エンターテイメント好きの私としては、「良い時代」になってきたということで良いと思う。観たい映像に手軽にアクセスできる環境は素晴らしい。
さらに、技術の進化によりスマートフォンやタブレットなどを使って、一般の人々がプロ並みの映像を簡単に撮影し編集できる時代にもなってきている。そして作った映像をインターネット上にアップして、世界中の誰にでも観てもらえる。一つの作品に仕上げるために、あれだけ大掛かりな作業をしなければ完成しなかった「映像」というものが、素人にも本当に身近なものになっている。観るばかりだった立場の人たちが、その気になれば今日にでも作り手になれるのだ。映像が持つ可能性はまだまだ測り知れないように思う。
プロかアマチュアか、あるいは作り手か受け手かという区別が、映像に関してはもう無いに等しい状態かと思う。この混沌とした状況が今後またどう変わっていくのか、私はとても興味を持っている。よく言われるのは、本当のプロフェッショナルが丹念に作ったものと、そうでないものの二極化が進むだろうということ。さて、どうなっていくことやら。
私はあまり素人が作ったYouTube動画を観ることはしないが、プロかどうかなどの肩書にこだわることなく、良いものに触れたいとは思っている。時間の制限や、その他様々な規制が少ない世界では、隠れた才能が開花する可能性は高まると思う。

Disks I can’t get rid of.
In the past, if I really liked a movie I saw, I would buy the DVD or Blu-ray so I could watch it whenever I wanted. I watched Top Gun so many times I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen it, and I have the complete box set of Star Wars I through VI, which I’ve also watched many times. It is a kind of collection, and I feel that having my favorite movie titles side by side serves to show my “humanity. When someone comes to my room for the first time, they might be able to tell my personality by looking at the lineup.
I love sports as well as movies, and I have a habit of recording the big games. I especially like European soccer, so I saved the important games played in Spain, called “Clasicos,” on Blu-ray every year. I also have a large amount of other disc media, such as American basketball and American football finals, that I have trouble finding a place to store.
Recently, however, YouTube and various video distribution sites have become more and more popular, and new content is becoming available for viewing. There is never enough time to watch all the movies and sports. And on the Internet, we can now watch not only the latest videos, but also old and nostalgic ones. I no longer need to watch the discs I have in storage.
When I started my collection, I used to record programs broadcast on TV on VHS video and save them. Times have really changed since then. As an entertainment lover, I think it is safe to say that we are in “good times”. It is wonderful to have an environment where we can easily access the videos we want to watch.
Furthermore, with the evolution of technology, ordinary people can now easily shoot and edit professional quality videos using smartphones and tablets. Then, they can upload their footage to the Internet, where it can be viewed by anyone in the world. The “video” that once required such extensive work to complete in order to produce a single work of art is now something that is truly accessible to the layman. People who used to just watch can now become creators if they want to. I believe that the possibilities of the visual image are still immeasurable.
The distinction between professional and amateur, creator and receiver, seems to be almost nonexistent when it comes to video. I am very interested to see how this chaotic situation will change in the future. It is often said that there will be an increasing polarization between those carefully produced by true professionals and those that are not. Well, I wonder what will happen.
I don’t often watch YouTube videos made by amateurs, but I do want to be exposed to good ones without being concerned about whether they are professional or not. I think that in a world where there are fewer restrictions on time and other various regulations, the possibility of hidden talent blossoming increases.
The bookshelf in my room is lined with VHS of Date vs. Graf
