日本のプロ野球に北海道の札幌市を本拠地とする「日本ハムファイターズ」というチームがある。かつては、現在アメリカのメジャーリーグで活躍している大谷翔平選手が所属していたチームだ。高校時代から「メジャーリーグで活躍したい」と公言していた大谷選手を敢えてドラフトで指名し、いずれ旅立っていくと分かっている選手の踏み台になるような役割を買って出るような素晴らしい、でもちょっと変わった球団である。

　その日本ハム球団は昨シーズンからOB選手の新庄剛志さんを監督に迎えた。突飛なアイデアをいくつも繰り出してきた新庄さんは間違いなく人気者ではあるが、現役時代から天才肌の男として知られ、プロ野球チームの監督が勤まるかどうかは甚だ疑問が残る人物だった。日本ハムはそういう人間を思いきって抜擢するような独特の経営感覚を持った球団でもある。結果はどうなるか分からないが、とりあえずトライしてみようというような発想だろうか。

　その新庄監督が就任して2年目の今年、彼がプロデュースした新しいデザインのユニフォームがお披露目された。アメリカのメディアでも話題になったそうだが、ま～奇抜なデザインで、古いタイプの野球ファンである私は、見た瞬間さすがにちょっと固まってしまった。ドルチェ＆ガッバーナも真っ青の、黒を基調とした黒と赤のツートンカラーで、大きな赤い襟がついている。そして胸には大きく「V」の字が象られていた。
　プロ野球界のご意見番の方がこれにすぐに噛みついて、「ユニフォームに対してプライドを持って欲しい」と発言したそうだ。つまり相応しくないからやめろというわけだ。肝心の着用する選手の評判はどうかというと、概ね好感を持っているらしいとのこと。監督が決めたことに真っ向から批判できないのかもしれないが。
　奇抜なユニフォームもファンサービスには大切かもしれないが、野球チームなのだから、最も重要なのはファンに勝利を届けることだろう。断トツの最下位で終わった昨シーズンからの順位上昇が期待される。今年もシーズンが始まって最下位街道をまっしぐらだったのだが、この新しいユニフォームが登場してからは、何と日本ハムが勝っているのだ。不思議なものである。
　選手の成長やチームワークの成熟など様々な要因が相まって「勝てる」ようになってきたのだろうが、このタイミングでそのようになってくると、「新庄監督の新ユニフォームのおかげで勝てるようになってきた説」が浮上してくるだろう。まだまだシーズンは始まったばかりで長い目で見ていかなければならない。けれどもこの野球とはあまり関係のない部分の変化が、メインの目的に影響を与えているということは、あると言えそうだ。注目していきたい。

　私は、野球は野球ファンだけのもので良いと思っていた。ルールも分からないような人に見てもらっても、どうせまた飽きて離れていくだろうと思うから。しかしそうではないのだと思う。野球ファンでなくても、大勢が集まる球場に来て、応援の声を出して、食事や飲み物を楽しんで、或いはサウナにでも入って、仲間や家族と語らいで、みんながそれぞれの楽しみ方で野球を楽しめば良いのだ。私はいつの間にか、また野球人主義という選民主義に陥っていた。
　伝統みたいなものは大切にしたい。先人たちの積み重ねがあるからこそ今があるのだと思う。しかし野球に限らず、常識を壊していく姿勢もまた大切のように思う。「やってみよう」という精神がなければ、次なる扉は開かれない。時代を変えてきたのはいつも変人と呼ばれた人たちだったように思う。何がどう作用するかなんて、人間に分かりっこない。

Employment of Oddballs

　There is a Japanese professional baseball team called the Nippon Ham Fighters, based in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The team once belonged to Shohei Otani, who is now an American Major League Baseball player. The Nippon Ham Fighters are a wonderful, but somewhat unusual team that drafted Otani, who had stated since high school that he wanted to play in the major leagues, and took on the role of a stepping stone for a player they knew would eventually leave.

　Last season, the Nippon Ham baseball team brought in former player Takeshi Shinjo as manager. Shinjo is undoubtedly a popular figure who has come up with many outlandish ideas, but he has been known as a man of genius since his playing days, and it is highly doubtful that he would be able to manage a professional baseball team. Nippon Ham is also a baseball team with a unique management sense that would boldly select such a person. The team’s thinking may have been, “We don’t know what the result will be, but let’s give it a try for the time being.

　This year, in his second year as manager, Shinjo unveiled the uniforms he produced for the team. I heard that the American media was talking about it, but it was such an eccentric design that I, being an old-fashioned baseball fan, froze up a little when I saw it. It was two-tone black and red with a large red collar. On the chest was a large “V”.
　An opinionated person in the professional baseball world immediately bit on this and said, “I want you to have pride in your uniforms. In other words, it is not appropriate and should be stopped. As for the reputation of the players who wear the uniforms, it is said that they are generally favorable. It may be impossible to criticize the coach’s decision outright, though.
　While the strange uniforms may be important for fan service, the most important thing for a baseball team is to deliver a victory to its fans. The team is expected to improve its ranking from last season, when it finished in the bottom of the standings by far. However, since the introduction of the new uniforms, Nippon Ham has been winning. It is a strange thing.
　Various factors such as the growth of players and the maturation of teamwork may have combined to make the team “winnable,” but if this happens at this point in the season, the theory that the team is winning thanks to Shinjo’s new uniforms will emerge. The season has just begun and we have to take a long view. However, it is possible that this change in a part of the game that has little to do with baseball is having an impact on the main goal of the team. I would like to pay attention to it.

　I used to think that baseball was only for baseball fans. I thought that if people who don’t even know the rules watch baseball, they will get bored and leave the game anyway. But I think that is not the case. Even if you are not a baseball fan, you can enjoy baseball in your own way by coming to a stadium where many people gather, cheering, enjoying food and drinks, or taking a sauna and talking with your friends and family. Before I knew it, I had fallen back into the electorate of baseball people-ism.
　I want to cherish things like tradition. I believe that the present exists because of the accumulation of our predecessors. However, I think it is also important to be willing to break with common sense, and not just in baseball. Without the spirit of “let’s give it a try,” the next door will not open. It seems to me that the people who have changed the times have always been those who were called “eccentrics. We humans have no way of knowing what will work.

　Otani’s home run this morning gave me courage again.
