私が通っているキリスト教の教会では、洗礼を受けて正式に教会員になると、月例献金を納めてもらう制度になっている。毎週日曜の主日礼拝時に捧げる献金とは別に、自分で決めた金額を月に一回神さまに捧げるという形で納める。これが牧師先生のいわゆる給料の元になり、また他の教会への献金として送られたり、教会の維持費に使われたりする。全ての教会について運営の仕方を知っているわけではないが、恐らくどの教会でも似たようなやり方でやりくりしていると思う。
　教会員が多い教会であれば、毎月ある程度のまとまった金額が集められるだろうから、だからこそいろいろご苦労が多いのかもしれないが、何とかその教会は“独立経営”でやっていける可能性がある。しかし私たちのような10数名しかいない小さな教会では、単独では到底やりくりできない。所属している地域の教団に頼りながら、牧師先生にも充分にはお支払いできないまま我慢してもらい、ギリギリで運営している。常にお金はない。キリスト教の教会なので経済的な問題などの、“この世のこと”に苦慮することは本意ではないが、こればっかりは仕方がない。

　月例献金の額は個人の裁量に任されている。献金する余裕がなければしなくても良い。キリスト教をはじめ、「宗教」と聞くと、「お金を取られる」というイメージが一般的につきまとうと思う。前述のように私たちの教会では定期的に献金をするので、確かにお金はかかる。
　しかしよくテレビニュースや報道で見聞きする、かの宗教団体のように、借金をしてまでの献金や家族の生活を犠牲にしてまで高価な品物を購入する必要は、ない。そういう活動をしている人たちと私たちが同じように比べて見られることが悲しい。本当に腹立たしく、邪魔に思う。正直、早く解散して欲しい。

　彼らは信者に、自分の生活は愚か、家族の人生までも破綻させてしまうほどの“信じる気持ち”をどうやって植え付けているのだろうと不思議に思う。例えば麻薬やその他の薬剤のようなものを投与したり、催眠術のようなマインドコントロールを施したりして洗脳しているのであれば、それはもう犯罪だろう。宗教団体ではなく、詐欺組織だ。
　そうではなくて、その団体が信じる神に対しての礼拝やお祈りを純粋に重ねることで、そこまでの強い思いを持たせることができるのだとしたら、私は恐ろしささえ感じる。ちょっと信じられない。真相は定かではないが、個人的な印象として、何らかの方法で洗脳が行われているように見える。

　「あなたがたは地上に富を積んではならない。そこでは、虫が食ったり、さび付いたりするし、また、盗人が忍び込んで盗み出したりする。富は、天に積みなさい。そこでは、虫が食うことも、さび付くこともなく、また、盗人が忍び込むことも盗み出すこともない。あなたの富のあるところに、あなたの心もあるのだ。」（マタイによる福音書6章19-20節）
　お金があるに越したことはない。お金の心配がなくなればもっと大事なことに集中できるようにも思う。牧師先生にもいくらか恩返しができる。だが、そうやってみんなで助け合いながら、乏しさを分かち合うこともまた、信仰への道なのだと思う。神さまは必要がない試練をお与えにはならないのではないか。すべての行いに意味があるのだと思う。私たちの教会に神さまとイエス様の恵みと祝福がいつまでもありますように。

　余裕がある教会なんて、無いよ

Faith and Donations

　At the Christian church I attend, when you are baptized and officially become a member of the church, you are expected to make a monthly donation. In addition to the offering you give during the Sunday service every week, you make a separate monthly donation of a set amount that you have decided on. This is the source of the pastor’s salary, and it is also sent as an offering to other churches or used to pay for the upkeep of the church. I don’t know how every church is run, but I think that probably every church manages in a similar way.
　If a church has a lot of members, it will probably be able to collect a certain amount of money each month, so it may have a lot of difficulties, but there is a possibility that the church can manage on its own. However, for a small church like ours with only a dozen or so members, it is impossible to manage on our own. We rely on the local church denomination to which we belong, and we are barely managing to keep the church running while asking the pastor to put up with not being able to pay him enough. We are always short of money. As a Christian church, it is not our intention to struggle with worldly matters such as financial problems, but there is nothing we can do about this.

　The amount of the monthly offering is left to the discretion of the individual. If you can’t afford to give an offering, you don’t have to. When you hear the word “religion”, including Christianity, I think the general image that comes to mind is that you’ll be asked for money. As I mentioned earlier, our church does ask for regular offerings, so it does cost money.
　However, unlike the religious groups you often hear about on TV news and in the media, there is no need to take out loans to make donations or to sacrifice your family’s lifestyle to buy expensive goods. It saddens me that we are being compared to those people. I really find it annoying and obstructive. To be honest, I want them to break up soon.

　I wonder how they manage to instill such a strong sense of belief in their followers that it can ruin their lives and even destroy their families. If they brainwash people by giving them drugs or other substances, or by using mind control methods like hypnosis, then that would be a crime. It’s not a religious organization, it’s a fraud organization.
　On the other hand, if the group is able to make people feel that strongly through their genuine worship and prayers to the god they believe in, I find that even a little frightening. It’s hard to believe. The truth is not certain, but my personal impression is that brainwashing is being carried out in some way.

　“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, for there your treasure is safe, neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-20)
　It’s better to have money. If you don’t have to worry about money, you can focus on more important things. You can also give something back to the pastor. But I think that helping each other and sharing our poverty is also a path to faith. I don’t think God gives us trials that we don’t need. I think that everything we do has meaning. May God and Jesus’ grace and blessings be with our church forever.

　There’s no such thing as a church with plenty of money.
