怒ったり騙したり、人の悪口を言ったり、そういういわゆる悪いことをしたことがないという人はいるのだろうか。善悪の基準を誰がどこに置くのかによって「何が悪か」という判定は違ってくるが、まぁ、私が生まれ育った日本での一般常識をベースに考えたい。
　 “悪い事”をしたことがない、やり方も知らない、やろうと思ったことさえない、という聖人君子のような人がもし居たとしたなら、素晴らしい事だと思う。その人には生まれながらに驕らず、高ぶらない謙虚な姿勢が備わっているのかもしれない。もしそのまま謙虚に人生を送ることができたなら、私が何かを言う必要はないだろう。キリスト教に触れずとも、きっと幸せに暮らせると思う。だがしかし、恐らくそういう人はいない。

　悪いことをした経験がなく、そうしたくなる欲求さえも理解できない人たちが存在するとして、そういう人たちは罪を感じることが難しいのではないだろうか。罪に気づくきっかけがほとんどないだろうし、自分の罪を知らなければ、悔い改めることはできない。しかし私が信じるキリスト教においては、人はみな罪人である。悔い改めることが神さまとの関係を作ってゆく、最も重要な一つだと思う。
　例えば79年前の太平洋戦争で日本は近隣の国々を侵略し、大変な罪を犯した。償っても償い切れるものではないだろう。このことに関して今を生きる日本人として、先達たちが犯した罪を覚え、背負って行かなければならないと思う。そしてこれからは互いに助け合いができる国家間の関係を構築していかなければならない。しかしそれは二次的と言うか、まず自分自身の罪の悔い改めを神さまの前でしっかりできて初めて、手が伸ばせる次の段階の務めになるのではないか。私は神さまと己の一対一関係が全ての基本になるのだと思っている。

　犯した罪が大きいほど、神さまとの関係は深まっていくように感じる。もちろん罪をもっと犯せと言っているのではない。そうではなく、上辺の行動や思考だけで判断するのではなく、もっと自分の心と深く向き合って、自分という人間の存在を吟味するべきだと思う。神さまに向かって、あなたは罪を犯したことがないと誓うことができますか？

　「二人には返す金がなかったので、金貸しは両方の借金を帳消しにしてやった。二人のうち、どちらが多くその金貸しを愛するだろうか。」シモンは、「帳消しにしてもらった額の多い方だと思います」と答えた。イエスは、「そのとおりだ」と言われた。（ルカによる福音書7章42-43節）
　新約聖書の巨人、パウロの具体的な罪は計り知れないほど大きかった。律法を守らず、イエス・キリストを信じる多くのキリスト者を教会から引きずり出して逮捕し、投獄した。そして処刑に賛成した。私はパウロのその罪の大きさゆえに、結局は偉大な信仰を得ることができたのではないかと思っている。キリスト教に改宗する前と後でも変わらず、パウロは自分が信じた道を力強く歩む力を備えていた。改宗後の悔い改める力も相当に強かったのだろう。
　大切なのは聖人君子のように罪を犯さない人物になることではなく、自分の罪をしっかり認識しようとする姿勢なのだと思う。それができれば、自然とイエス・キリストに感謝する気持ちが湧いてくるのではないだろうか。

The Gravity of the Sin

　I wonder if there is anyone who has never done anything bad, such as getting angry, cheating, or saying bad things about other people. The judgment of “what is bad” will differ depending on who and where the standard of right and wrong is placed, but I’d like to think based on the common sense of Japan, where I was born and raised.
　If there were someone who had never done anything wrong, who didn’t know how to do it, and who had never even thought about doing it, I think that would be wonderful. Perhaps that person was born with a humble attitude that didn’t allow them to be arrogant or conceited. If they were able to live their life with that humility, then I wouldn’t need to say anything. I think they would be able to live a happy life without ever coming into contact with Christianity. However, I think that probably no one is like that.

　If there are people who have never done anything wrong and don’t even understand the desire to do so, it must be difficult for them to feel sins. They would have almost no chance to realize their sins, and if they don’t know their sins, they can’t repent. However, in the Christianity I believe in, everyone is a sinner. I think repentance is one of the most important things that creates a relationship with God.
　For example, 79 years ago, Japan invaded neighboring countries and committed a terrible sin in the Pacific War. Even if we make amends, I don’t think it will be enough. As Japanese people living today, I think we have to remember the sins committed by our predecessors and carry them with us. And from now on, we have to build relationships between nations that allow us to help each other. But I think that is secondary, and that the first step is to repent of our own sins before God, and only then can we reach out to others and fulfill our duties. I think that the one-on-one relationship between God and ourselves is the basis of everything.

　The greater the sin, the deeper the relationship with God seems to become. Of course, I’m not saying you should sin more. Rather, I think you should examine your own existence as a person by facing your own heart more deeply, rather than judging based on your outward actions and thoughts. Can you swear to God that you have never sinned?

　“The two of them did not have money to pay back, so the moneylender canceled the debts for both of them. Which of the two do you think loved the moneylender more?” Simon answered, ‘I suppose the one who had the larger debt canceled.’ Jesus said to him, ‘You are right.’ (Luke 7:42-43)
　The specific sins of the New Testament giant Paul were immeasurably great. He dragged many Christians who believed in Jesus Christ, who did not keep the law, out of the church, arrested them, and imprisoned them. He even voted in favor of their execution. I think that it was because of the enormity of Paul’s sins that he was ultimately able to gain great faith. Before and after converting to Christianity, Paul was able to walk the path he believed in with strength. I think he also had considerable strength to repent after converting.
　I think the important thing is not to become someone who does not sin like a saint, but to have the attitude of trying to recognize one’s own sins. If you can do that, I think you will naturally feel grateful to Jesus Christ.
