There are many kinds of “temptations,” but one of the most irresistible temptations for me is “sleepiness. Once it strikes, it is almost irresistible. These days, it is as if I “pass out” and fall asleep. There is no warning at all that I am about to fall asleep, and I fall asleep without even realizing it, which sometimes scares even myself.
The thing that makes me laugh the most is the repetition of “I fall asleep watching a video, wake up rather quickly, replay the video to the part I remember, start watching it again, fall asleep again, wake up, replay it again, fall asleep again, and go back to …….” To go on forever. Sometimes, when I am in the middle of the loop, I fall asleep and forget that I am even in the loop. It’s like forgetting that you are forgetting. It’s as if I’m already suffering from dementia or some other terminal condition. Anyway, I am not very good at being up.
Lately I have been able to sleep normally in a sitting position. In the movie “Leon,” the assassin always sat on a chair and fastened his body with a belt to fall asleep in order to quickly respond to a sudden crisis. I never thought I would be able to master it decades later.
I knew that I would not be able to do it for long periods of time, and that if I slept sitting up every night, I would get tired, and eventually I would not be able to keep up my strength. But I can do it for about three hours, and I wake up feeling refreshed, probably because I sleep shallowly. If I want to take a nap, I might as well do it in a sitting position. But for some reason, sometimes I drool and sometimes I don’t, and when I do, it’s a bit of a hassle. Well, I guess I don’t need to talk about drooling.
When I am concentrating and when I am full. These two situations require extreme caution. Especially in the early afternoon, when the two overlap, resistance may be pointless. If you try to have a meeting or conference, it may be an act of self-destruction. Meetings with supervisors should be avoided as much as possible.
The strange thing is that I feel sleepy when I concentrate. I wonder why. Or is this a phenomenon that happens only to me? Especially when I am reading a book, I always feel sleepy. Is it a kind of rejection reaction from my “I’m not good at books” complex?
Basically, I think I feel sleepy because I haven’t had enough sleep and I am tired. It’s obvious, and I know that. However, I have to spare time for sleep, push myself a little too hard physically, and still want to do some things. There is nothing better than maintaining a regular lifestyle, keeping up one’s strength, and staying healthy. In fact, there is a sense that age-related decline is aiding sleepiness. But I still want to have time to enjoy myself. Fun often lies a little outside the realm of “safety” and “correctness. Stay up a little later, drink a little too much, push yourself a little too hard, or get a little sloppy …….
I actually like sleeping itself and find the sensation of sleep making me tired to be pleasant. But seriously, I want to be stronger against sleepiness. I just want to have more fun. My current physical strength is not enough. I want to be able to sleep less and still have a body that can handle it. But at my age, I wonder if I will ever be able to develop that kind of strength.
Taking a nap is more efficient in the end.
