It is difficult to immediately trust someone you have just met, and I think it is also dangerous in today’s world. Since this is the case even in Japan, which is considered relatively safe, I imagine that it is probably even more dangerous in other countries. Of course, it depends on the country.
I have a bitter memory of being mugged in New York when I was 20 years old. At that time, I was financially harmed but not physically injured, so perhaps I should consider myself lucky. Sadly, it is not possible to live only by being a “good person.
However, in my heart of hearts, I am inclined to trust people even when I meet them for the first time. In reality, I have not been able to completely let down my guard, but I do have this desire. Rather than being suspicious from the start, I want to be the kind of person who can build a relationship with someone with a good feeling, wondering what good qualities he or she has. In other words, I want to be open-minded from the first meeting.
However, the reality is that we have not been able to do this, although we have tried. I have a fear that if I approach people unprotected, they may enter my mind. One of my major themes is whether I can break through that wall by myself. Whether or not I can expose myself to the possibility that I might be deceived. I think that is the key to my growth.
On the other hand, there are times when the other person does not let down their guard against me. I am also troubled by my inability to do so, so I can understand why others may be wary of me. It is difficult to build a good relationship if both parties do not open up to each other.
Let me consider what I can do in such a case. To sum up, I should let down my guard and show my willingness to accept anything from the other person. I will mobilize all my words, facial expressions, gestures, whatever, and persist in communicating that I am open to that person. That’s all. The only thing left is to pray and wait.
No matter how hard I try or how much I pray, there are many cases where the other person does not accept me. Maybe I didn’t try hard enough, or maybe I tried too hard. Maybe we just weren’t compatible, or maybe the person just happened to be in a bad mood that day. In the end, I will never know the exact reason. But I think it was inevitable. I think it is wrong for me to take all the responsibility for everything. It would be strange if everything went the way I wanted it to. I think I should keep the point of giving up.
A thought just occurred to me. Maybe I am hesitant to trust others from the start for fear of failing in this fellowship. I may shy away from initial close involvement because of the hurt I feel if I fail to mingle, or because of the pain I feel if I am not accepted. This feels like a “natural” reason, as it does for many people, but now that I think about it again, it seems clearer and clearer to me. Once again, I had been scared from the start, without realizing it.
There is nothing better than not getting hurt. I don’t want to be hurt. But now I wonder if we can become kinder to others by the amount of wounds we have sustained. How to live?
After all, the cause is always inside me.
