It is natural that our conception of time changes as we get older. We start living toward death from the moment we are born, and whether it is a hundred years later or a few years later, it is a fact for everyone that the countdown to death has begun at birth. I am over 50 years old and probably past the halfway point in my life, which means that half of my life is over. When I think about how I will spend the other half of my life, I think differently than when I was younger. Every moment is getting closer to the “end” of time.
Simply put, I begin to think that the use of time that seems to be “wasted” is a waste of time. On holidays when I do not step out of my house, which is a very common situation for me, I often regret that I have wasted my time. Although I believe that “nothing in life is wasted,” I come to regret it if something doesn’t stick in my mind, even if it is something invisible, such as an impression or a small memory, like “it was interesting” or “it was poignant,” for example.
I am sure that even while I am in a daze doing nothing, which seems to be a waste of time, I am thinking about this and that, including unnecessary things in my mind. Perhaps even when I am asleep, I am looking for something to blog about. However, if that doesn’t remain in my mind or in my heart as a proof of my life, I will wonder what the hell I was doing.
On the other hand, if someone had said to me, “You’ve already passed 50, you should live more comfortably!” I would think to myself, “That’s true, too. I am also very attracted to spending time just being captivated by the beauty of the leaves on the trees rippling in the wind and the brightly colored flowers, which I had never really noticed before. Perhaps such a way of life is more appropriate for a person who has passed the turn of the century. As I write this, I really feel that way.
In reality, however, I have not been able to create an environment in which I can live in seclusion, and I still do not think I can suppress my deepest desire to be actively involved in society. My goal is only to further explore a new me.
When I try to write this blog and think about what I want to write about, there are days when it takes me a very long time to come up with a topic. The more time passes, the more impatient I feel and the more I think, “What a waste of time!” I think. Then I feel even more impatient. Once you fall into such a “negative cycle,” it is difficult to escape. Sometimes I even give up and carry it over to the next day, and when that happens, I am really disappointed at my lack of strength. Such days may be more common.
But I hope to be able to enjoy the time that seems like a waste. Tick-tock, tick-tock, the hands of the clock tick away toward the end of my life, but I hope to live my time and my life in my own way, without fearing death. I hope I can have the courage to do so.
I think I will be able to hold it in when I die.
