[The Age of the Mind]

The Age of the Mind

Whenever I go on a long vacation where I lose track of the days of the week and the end is near, I always wonder if I will ever be able to return to my normal life. Every day, I wake up at a certain time, get ready for work, and complete my work under stress that is not light. By the evening, I’m pretty exhausted. I wondered if I would be able to adapt to that harsh world again soon. I’m sure I’ll be able to handle it once it starts. But no matter how many times I experience it, I can’t get used to this feeling of anxiety. It seems I’m a coward at heart.

I can hear people saying, “You don’t have to rest,” but that’s not the case. Resting gives me more energy in my daily life and broadens my perspective and way of thinking, which tends to be biased. In any case, you can never work too much, take too much time off, or be “too __“. I think it’s difficult to find the right balance, because it requires a calm assessment of your current state, and you have to consider it in light of the circumstances surrounding you. However, if you don’t take the proper steps to deal with this, your mind will not rest even when you are resting, and you may fall into a vicious cycle. I believe that people, things, and ourselves are all connected.

Until a while ago, I think there was a custom that when the New Year opened and everyone went to work for the first time, the main task was to meet and greet each other, and the company could leave in the morning that day. It was customary for the news to feature the scene of the women coming to work in their radiant kimonos. Now, with the government recommending telework in Corona, I am not sure how many companies still have this custom. When I was younger, I used to look at that and think, “What a waste. When I was younger, I used to think it was a waste of time, and would tsk-tsk, “If you’re going to go to all that trouble to come to work, why don’t you just take another day off?
But now I’m convinced it makes sense. Working at max power the day after a week off is literally hazardous to the body. Gradually getting back into a routine would probably have a better effect on subsequent performance. This may be the first step in a “vacation-busting strategy” for corporate warriors, devised by some smart businessman in the festive mood of the New Year. Well, I’m sure it will return to normal sooner or later because Japanese people are all serious even if left alone.

It would be cute if it was just “I don’t want to go to work,” but after a long vacation like this, you really have to be careful. I heard that more and more people are unable to go to school or work. I hear that more and more people are despairing over their inability to leave their homes and are choosing suicide. Perhaps that is why schools and workplaces have become such “tough” places for them. Maybe they are not sure if they can adapt again. I don’t think it’s someone else’s problem, and I don’t think it could happen anytime. Well, I’m not that sick, but at least I can understand a little bit how those people feel who can’t leave their homes.
If you are close to someone who is showing signs of this, please listen to them. You don’t need wise advice. Just being there for them is enough. And if you find yourself in this situation, please talk to someone, be it a family member or a friend.

Too much patience is not good.
