Do for You(その2)[Do for You (Part 2)]

Do for You (Part 2)

When I was in high school, I was a member of the baseball team. We were a really weak team and only made it past the first round of the prefectural summer Koshien tournament once every three or four years at best. Even when we played practice games, we lost many games in a row. There were many seniors who retired without ever winning an official game in three years, including the spring and fall tournaments. There were only about 14 to 5 players in total in the three grades, and we couldn’t even play a red and white game within the team.
The coach was an English teacher who had no baseball experience and had already passed away 10 years ago. He didn’t have a powerful knock, but he was good at hitting catcher’s flies. In the past, high school baseball coaches were usually “demons” who were usually feared. Our coach, on the other hand, was so calm that I think he rarely got angry. Well, he was a genuine Christian, so I guess it was natural. The coach always drove us home when we were running late after extended practice. It was a long way for the coach to go home, but he never showed any unpleasant face.

For a very short time, I happened to have the opportunity to support coach the baseball team of my alma mater. Now, the environment has changed and students can take the school bus home even when they are late for practice. I envy them. However, some of the more ambitious students started to ask for morning practice as well. As expected, there is no school bus service for morning practice. I picked up one of the students from his house every morning by car, and we met up with the rest of the team on the field to practice together. We really did it every morning. The current coach didn’t come to the morning practice, so I reported to him how the players were doing that day, how they were doing, and what their characteristics were. I was genuinely excited and had a lot of fun.

As I sweated with the students, I always remembered “my coach” who had been so kind to me. It made me happy to think that my coach was having such a good time with us back then. The skin on the palms of my hands peeled off every day, but I held back the screams as I taped them up and knocked as hard as I could. I think I was able to do my job as a coach with a dedicated attitude because I am a baseball fan at heart. But I also had the feeling that I was returning the favor to “my coach,” if you can call it “pay it forward”. The coach would be watching over us from the heavens, and I would never slack off in practice.

Although this is a special story involving deep memories of my irreplaceable youth, it is still just one striking example, and everyone lives more or less under the care of someone else. That’s what I wanted to say. I think the question is how to truly realize this, and how to live after realizing it. I think the question is, “Is it okay to be indebted to others all the time? Is it okay to be that kind of person? Is it just me, or is it natural to want to do something for the benefit of others when we think in that direction? Even if you are good only to yourself, it is probably empty.
