[Graduation Essay]

Graduation Essay

Let’s do something meaningful! Otherwise it’s a waste of time” I always think, but in the end I often end up wasting my time doing nothing in particular. I wonder how many days I have had such holidays so far. It’s a little scary to think about. But what are “meaningful things” anyway?
Watching videos, reading books, studying, exercising, writing blogs… these are just a few of the things I do on my days off, but are they really “meaningful” activities? I feel like they are just a way to deal with my motivation and relieve my personal frustration. Maybe doing nothing but resting my head and body will give me more energy for the next week and will be more “meaningful”. Or maybe there is something very meaningful that I don’t know about yet, and I’m just not aware of it. I wonder what “meaningful” really means. Will I be okay with this?

No matter how much I think about it, it’s hard to be sure. If I don’t move, I want to blame myself for my laziness, and if I do something, I feel lost and wonder if it’s okay. And in the end, a kind of emptiness lingers in my mind, and I feel bitter. Hmmm, I’m in trouble. I don’t know what’s right at all at the moment. But I guess I have no choice but to suffer like this. That’s the kind of person I am.

As I was writing this, for some reason the sentence I contributed to my high school graduation book came to mind, and I found myself looking for it in the dusty cardboard box. I can’t seem to throw things away, so the book was there, quietly but firmly. When I read my own writing for the first time in decades, I was a little surprised. It was very much like me. It’s not that I’ve changed much, but I feel unconfident, anxious, and lost. And the way it was tied was also very me. I’ll reproduce the last part below.
We are still young, and in the true sense of the word, we haven’t done anything yet. So I think we all have a lot of potential. I’m starting from nothing again, but I believe in my potential and I’m going to give it my best shot.”
Unfortunately, I’m no longer young, but other than that, I think I could write this tomorrow. The expression “in the true sense of the word” seems to have been used from that time. I think my homeroom teacher used this expression as a habit, and I think it has been transferred to me.

I was feeling a little depressed because I couldn’t move as much as I wanted to during this three-day weekend. I was also blaming myself a little. But my graduation book lifted my spirits a little, and I felt kind of weird. At the same time, I realized that I have been standing in front of the same question for almost 40 years now. The answer still feels far away, but it’s true that it became experienced considerably. One thing that has changed between me as a high school student and now is that I don’t really believe in the possibility of “self” anymore.

There may be more in the series of old writings in the future.
