2)[The Beer Case (Part 2)]

The Beer Case (Part 2)

After entering high school, I continued to play baseball, but my deep-rooted passion for the sport had gone downhill. The baseball boy who had dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player had somehow realized the potential of his abilities and realized that there were more fun things to do in the world without sticking to baseball. In addition, the baseball team at the high school I entered was so weak that it was impossible for me, no matter how delusional I was, to go to Koshien. As my love for baseball waned, I felt as if I was losing my identity. Playing baseball, which I loved so much, became more and more painful.

During the summer break of my sophomore year, when I was repeatedly practicing without much energy, a semi-official game was held at each school’s field instead of the big stadium to determine the seeded schools for the fall qualifying tournament. We happened to be playing against a strong team, a high school that had a reputation for having a good catcher as well as overall strength. He was an unknown player in junior high school, but it seemed that he had grown rapidly since entering high school. Even though I hadn’t practiced much, I was cocky enough to put up a fight against him, and for the first time in a long time, I was fired up to play.

I started the game as the batting 4th and catcher, but when I got up to bat, I couldn’t swing the bat very well. I was completely lacking in swinging. The head of the bat didn’t come out at the right time as I imagined it in my head. My motivation for the day wasn’t good enough anymore. And I thought, “I’ve got it!” as I hit the ball, but it staggered up over the first base bench. The catcher of the opposing team, who had a good reputation, was running hard after the ball. He ran straight into the equipment section where there were beer cases and helmets and wrestled one out away from me.
I was very sad to see that. It wasn’t because I was out. It was because I felt as if I had been confronted with something I had forgotten. The me of those days was no longer there. He was the old me. He was a good player with guts, and I surrendered.

It would have been a good story if I could have been inspired by him and used this as an opportunity to start working hard again, but I am a bad person. Many things happened, but in the end, I gave up and left the baseball team a few months later. I couldn’t stick it out.
Looking back now, I can say whatever I want. High school baseball is truly a valuable experience that can only be had in high school, and it is not all about winning games. I believe that daily practice in your youth is the most effective way to train yourself mentally and physically. Of course, working together with friends to achieve the same goal is an invaluable experience, and sometimes even clashing with each other promotes growth. It would have been better if I could have immersed myself in it and worked harder. However, I believe that this weakness of not being able to do my best is part of my personality. I can’t regret it, and I’m glad I did.
I’ve been through a lot, and now I’m here. For some reason, that makes me irresistibly happy.

Whether there is an obstacle or not, I know when I can catch it.
