[Human Relations]

Human Relations

There are many different kinds of great jobs in the world: writing books, immersing yourself in some research, growing crops, developing software, etc. Each has its own characteristics, and the aspects of work change in various ways as it progresses, so it is difficult to easily sort them out. However, I would like to take the liberty of dividing the work into two categories: work to “make things” and work for “people.
I think that the skills, knowledge, and mental strength such as tenacity required to “make things” should be celebrated more. The existence of such work itself is a culture in itself, and I believe it is an essential part of the foundation of an economic society. Without such work, people and money would not circulate, and modern society would not function.
On the other hand, let us consider the work of human counterparts. Whether or not a lot of money is made is not a consideration here, and I don’t want to make a comparison as to which is more difficult. I just want to say that “human beings” are quite difficult to deal with.

One might say, “That’s why life is interesting,” but I can’t think so comfortably about human relationships. If the relationship is one in which I can treat the client as a customer, I can draw a line in the sand, or rather, I can work without the need to step in and deal with the client in a detached manner. I feel that the trend in the world is toward the construction of such mechanical relationships. It is as if there is a myth that the elimination of waste creates a rational and functional world and produces good results. On the surface, that may be the right answer.

What about the profession of “teacher,” for example? In manual terms, there may be no need to step into the hearts and minds of students. If you can maintain a detached, mechanical relationship with your students, and just play it safe so as not to cause any problems, that would probably be enough to get the job done. In reality, however, it does not seem so easy. Not only is the problem of non-attendance getting bigger year by year, but many young teachers are getting tired of being overly concerned about this and that, and the number of new teachers is decreasing. There is also a mountain of other problems, such as the way they teach club activities, the excessive number of working hours, and the way they deal with parents. After all, students cannot be treated like “customers.
What about the job of “boss”? It may be a job that can be fulfilled by maintaining a distance in the relationship with subordinates and evaluating them in a cool manner. I have no experience working for a large company, but I think that is probably not enough, even though I hope it is. I think it should be a good advisor, a strict mentor, a motivator, and a facilitator. Well, no one will be that perfect, but at least aim for it.

It is difficult to work with a large number of people. I think there are times when you have to put aside what you believe and the experience you have cultivated and work to accept the other person. Confronting someone with a way of thinking that is far removed from your own may be one of the most effective ways to understand them. It is thought that it is not possible to serve only by imposing one’s own opinions and ideas.
However, if this happens too often or for too long, the danger of one’s own division increases. Until we are able to withstand this, we may not be able to say that we are on our own. I believe that it is only after we have gone beyond such activities that both sides will be able to refine and build genuine human relationships.

There are a surprising number of people whose way of thinking I don’t understand.
