忙しいことは良いことだと思う。仕事かプライベートか、或いは儲かるか儲からないかは別にして、忙しいということは、誰かが私を必要としてくれているということ。その仕事をすることで喜んでくれる人がいるのなら、私はすごく頑張れる。もしかしたらお金が絡んでいないボランティアワークのような事の方が、私は頑張れるのかもしれない。報酬をもらわなければ生きてはいけないけれど、働くモチベーションと言うのは、案外お金とは関係のない場面での方が強いかもしれない。

　久しぶりに本気でプレゼン資料を作った。プレゼンする本人が書いたシナリオに沿って、パワーポイントを使ってアニメーションを作成してみた。PCで、クリックするごとに文字や写真がアクションを起こし、次の展開へ移っていく仕組み。私の専門であるビデオ編集や印刷物のデザインをするときはAdobe社のアプリケーションを使って作る。つまりpremiereをはじめ、Photoshopやillustrator、After Effectsなどを駆使して日ごろは働いている。しかし大勢の前でのプレゼンテーションとなると、発表者がクリックのタイミングを自分で調整できるので、やはりパワーポイントを使った方がやりやすい。仕方がないので、慣れないアプリではあったがパワーポイントにちょっとチャレンジしてみた。

　かなり苦戦したが、逆に映像魂みたいなものに火がついて、パワポでビデオを制作する感覚で作ってみた。文字を動かすにしても動かし方の調査から始め、結局丸2日間もかかってしまったのだが、最後は結構満足のいくものが出来上がった。いっさい動画素材を使わず、しかし見ている人たちが動画を見ていると錯覚するぐらいのクオリティーに仕上げてやろうと気合を入れた。結果的にどこまでの印象を見る人たちに残せたかは分かりようがないが、私としてはやり切った感触が充分にあって、久しぶりに楽しかった。

　今回の事は、日ごろお世話になっている方からの依頼があって、お手伝いさせてもらった。作っている2日間、その人の喜ぶ顔がみたい一心で、本当に時間を忘れて頑張れた。「これって、パワポ上でできるのかな？」という素人レベルからの作業だったので、本当に冷や汗をかきながらの手探り作業だった。それでも何となくできたのは、AdobeやMicrosoft、Apple等々、会社は違うけれど、媒体制作をするためのアプリ内でできることや操作性には垣根がなくなってきているのかなと感じた。ユーザーにとってはありがたいことだと思う。
　そして改めて感じたのは、アプリケーションありきではなく、まずは自分でこうしたいというビジョンがあって、それを実現するために何かしらのアプリを使うことが基本なんだということ。アプリの機能に自分が振り回されるようでは制作者としては情けない。今回は慣れないパワーポイントを使わなければならないという縛りのなかで苦戦したが、私の良いものを作りたいという情熱が、知らなかったパワポのポテンシャルを引き出した。たまにはこういう仕事も悪くない。

Application vs. Passion

　Being busy is a good thing. Whether it is work or personal, profitable or not, being busy means that someone needs me. If there is someone who is happy for me to do that work, I can work very hard. Maybe I can work harder at things like volunteer work where there is no money involved. I can’t live without getting paid, but my motivation to work may be stronger in situations that have nothing to do with money.

　For the first time in a long time, I seriously made a presentation material. I used PowerPoint to create an animation based on a scenario written by the person giving the presentation, using a PC, where each click causes the text and pictures to take action and move on to the next development. When I edit videos or design printed materials, which is my specialty, I use Adobe applications. In other words, I work with Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc. on a daily basis. However, when it comes to presentations in front of a large audience, it is still easier to use PowerPoint because the presenter can adjust the timing of the clicks himself. I had no choice but to give PowerPoint a try, even though it was an unfamiliar application.

　I struggled a lot, but on the contrary, it ignited my visual spirit and I tried to make it as if I were making a video using PowerPoint. It took me two whole days to make it, starting with researching how to move the text around, but I ended up with something I was quite satisfied with. I was determined to create a video of such quality that viewers would be fooled into thinking they were watching a movie, even though I did not use any video material. I don’t know how much of an impression I was able to leave on the viewers as a result, but I felt that I had done my best, and for the first time in a long time, I had a lot of fun.

　This time, I was asked to help by a person to whom I have been indebted for many years. During the two days I was working on the project, I was so focused on making the person happy that I really forgot about the time and worked hard. I was working from a layman’s level, wondering, “Can this be done on a PowerPoint presentation? I was really groping around in a cold sweat. Even so, I was able to somehow manage to do it, and I felt that although there are different companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, and Apple, there are no longer any barriers in terms of what can be done and operability within applications for media production. I think this is a good thing for users.
　What I also felt again is that it is fundamental to have a vision of what you want to do first, and then use some kind of application to realize that vision, rather than having an application in itself. It is shameful for a creator to let himself be swayed by the functions of an application. This time, I struggled under the constraint of having to use PowerPoint, which I was unfamiliar with, but my passion to create something good brought out the potential of PowerPoint, which I did not know. Sometimes this kind of work is not so bad.
