先日参議院選挙があった。世の中はその話題で持ちきりだったが、私は政治に興味がもてない。経済問題や外交政策など、何が一番良いのかよく分からない。そういうことよりも自分や人の心の事に関心があり、そっちの方に一生懸命で、政治関連の問題からは距離を取って傍観してきた。そうは言っても興味がないでは済まされない場合もあり、今さらなのだがYouTubeを見るついでに、最近は政治家やジャーナリスト等が発信している動画を見るようにしている。あくまでもそれらの動画の冒頭を見て、興味を引かれる内容であれば見るという前提がある話ではあるが。
　政治に興味がなく、だから私はいわゆる“ニュースの裏側”的な詳しいことは分からないのだけれど、一般的なテレビニュースや新聞報道レベルの情報は知っている。いや、知っているつもりになっているだけなのかもしれない。流れてくる情報を受け止めるだけで、さらに自分で詳しく調べたり勉強してみたりすることはほとんどない。私は何かにハマっていないと、本当に無関心でつまらない男だ。

　ところがそういった動画を見ていると、彼らが言っている内容が真実かどうか自分でしっかり検証する必要があるのだろうが、とりあえず動画を信用するとして考えてみると、私はマスコミが伝えるいわゆる一般的な報道に、惑わされていることに気づかされる。政府、財界、官僚の癒着・結託に、我々一般の市民は翻弄されているように思われる。三者それぞれが既得権益を守るために、我々は犠牲になっているのではないだろうか。
　動画の中の人たちが説明上手で、私がその人たちの術中ハマり、騙されている危険があることも知っている。しかしその三者の結びつきは非常に強固なものであり、増税や税制改正によって我々から税金を搾り取ることで自分たちの地位や利益を守ってきたと考えれば、私の中で非常に納得がいく。私はマスコミも含めた権力者たちから、上手く操られてきたのだろうと思う。私はそのことに気づかない、聞き分けの良い静かな小市民だ。これを書きながら、何だか段々腹が立ってきた。

　世の中、お金や名誉が全てではない。それは重々承知している。お金だけのために生きるのであれば、私はとうの昔にそのような道を選んでいただろう。しかし恐らくお金持ちはお金持ちでいられる理由があって、そういう類いの人たちは富や名声を保持する方法と言うか、誉れ高く生きる術を代々継承しているのではないだろうか。政治家の世襲制や経営者一族などと言う言葉は、まさにその象徴的な姿を表すものだろう。そういったエリートたちに小さき者たちは長く利用されてきたのかもしれないと思う。

　政治に興味が湧いて来たと言えるほどの大きな変化ではない。選挙が終わってまた少し時間が経てば、熱は冷めるような気もしている。ただ政治技術的な知識については相変わらず興味がないが、エリートたちが自分の金銭欲や名声欲を満たすために今までどんな行動を取ってきて、これからどのようにそのステイタスを守っていくのかという点は私にとって新しく、関心がある。政治ではなく、人間の生き方に関心があると言える。そういう「人を見る」という視点を通して政治や社会を見ていけば、私の中にまた新しい変化が生まれてくるような気がする。

Behind the news

　The Senate election was held the other day. The whole world was abuzz with talk about it, but I have no interest in politics. I don’t really understand what’s best when it comes to economic issues or foreign policy. I’m more concerned with matters of the heart, both my own and others’, and have always kept my distance from political issues, observing them from afar. That said, there are times when I can’t just ignore it, so lately I’ve started watching videos posted by politicians and journalists on YouTube, just for the sake of it. That said, I only watch the beginning of these videos, and only if the content catches my interest.
　I’m not interested in politics, so I don’t know the so-called “behind-the-scenes” details, but I do know the general information from TV news and newspaper reports. Or maybe I just think I know. I just take in the information that comes my way and rarely bother to investigate or study it further on my own. I’m a really uninteresting guy who has no real passions.

　However, when I watch these videos, I realize that I should probably verify the accuracy of what they’re saying for myself. But even if I just trust the videos for now, I realize that I’ve been swayed by the so-called “general reporting” of the media. It seems like the government, the business world, and the bureaucracy are colluding and manipulating us, the general public. Are we being sacrificed so that these three groups can protect their vested interests?
　I am aware that the people in the videos are skilled at explaining things, and there is a risk that I am falling into their trap and being deceived. However, the connection between these three groups is extremely strong, and if I consider that they have maintained their status and interests by extracting taxes from us through tax increases and tax reforms, it makes perfect sense to me. I think I have been skillfully manipulated by those in power, including the media. I am an obedient, quiet citizen who is unaware of this. As I write this, I find myself getting increasingly angry.

　Money and fame are not everything in this world. I am well aware of that. If I were to live only for money, I would have chosen that path long ago. However, perhaps there is a reason why the wealthy remain wealthy, and such people have inherited the methods of maintaining wealth and fame, or the art of living with honor, from generation to generation.The terms “political hereditary system” and “business family” are symbolic representations of this. I think that the little people have been exploited by these elites for a long time.

　It’s not a big change that has made me interested in politics. I feel like my enthusiasm will cool down once the election is over and some time has passed. However, while I remain uninterested in political technicalities, I am intrigued by how these elites have acted to satisfy their greed for money and fame, and how they will maintain their status moving forward. It is not politics itself that interests me, but rather the way humans live their lives. By viewing politics and society through this lens of observing people, I feel that new changes may emerge within me.
