本を読むことから長く逃げていた。読むことは得意ではなく苦手意識が強くて、それでも例えば大学の卒論執筆時などどうしても必要な時は相当我慢してなんとか乗り切っていた。読むのが遅いから時間がかかって集中力が切れてしまう悪循環から逃れられない。
昔から自分が本当はたくさん読みたいと思っていることには気づいていた。何とかできないかと悩んでいた時にたまたまテレビで「速読」を取り扱っている番組を見てヒントを得た。20年ほど前のことだ。それで色々調べてみたが速読を教えてくれる教室は東京にしかまだなく、当時は遠隔授業などなかったので断念せざるを得なかった。今年の夏の終わりに何となくネットサーフィンしていると速読の文字が飛びこんで来た。何と家のほど近くに速読教室ができているではないか！？すぐに体験レッスンに申し込み、受講後その場で契約した。24回のレッスンで15万円を超える契約料だったが、思い切って念願のチャンスに飛び乗った。新型コロナの10万円給付金があって助かった。そして3ヶ月に及ぶレッスンがつい先日終了し、めでたく卒業とあいなった。さて、実際に速読できるようになったのかどうか結果はいかに⁇
結論から言うと読むスピードが早くなったかどうかは分からない。早くなった自覚はあまりない。少し早くなったかもしれない程度だ。けれども一冊を最後まできちっと完読できるようにはなっている。不思議な感じだ。本に相対する姿勢が自然と改まったのだろうか。とにかく本との関わり方が変わった。今までは読みかけて諦めて放ってある本が部屋に散乱しているような状態だったが、今はそれらをもう一度手に取って最初からきちんと読み終わって棚に並べることが喜び・楽しみになっている。そして新たに10冊ほど買い足した。
喜多川泰さんという作家の本に出会えたことがとても助けになっている。2回ずつ4冊読んでこれから5冊目に入ろうかなというところだ。とても好感が持てる読みやすい文章で、さらに教えられる内容ばかりだ。心に残った箇所に付箋を貼るのだがあまりに多くて大変なことになっている。読んだのは「ライフトラベラー」「賢者の書」「君と会えたから……」「手紙屋」の4冊。いつかこれらについても書きたいと思う。素敵な本に感謝。
てことは15万円は安かったかな……。

I had long been on the run from reading books. I was not good at reading, and yet I managed to get through it with a lot of patience when it was absolutely necessary, for example, when writing my university thesis. I can’t escape the vicious cycle of reading so slowly that it takes me a long time and I lose my concentration.
For a long time, I had noticed that I really wanted to read a lot. It was about 20 years ago when I was wondering if I could do something about it, and I happened to see a TV program on “speed reading” that gave me an idea. I did some research and found that the only school that taught speed reading was in Tokyo, and since there were no remote classes at that time, I had to give up the idea. At the end of this summer, I was surfing the Internet and came across the word “speed reading. I was surprised to see that a speed-reading class had opened near my house! I immediately signed up for a trial lesson and signed up on the spot; the contract fee was over 150,000 yen for 24 lessons, but I took the plunge and jumped at the chance of my dreams. Thank goodness I had the 100,000 yen benefit from the new Corona. The three months of lessons ended just the other day, and I was able to graduate from the program. Now, how did the results turn out to be?
To sum up, I am not sure if my reading speed has improved or not. I am not really aware that my reading speed has improved. However, I am able to read a book to the last page. It is a strange feeling. Perhaps my attitude toward books has naturally changed. In any case, the way I interact with books has changed. I used to have books scattered around my room that I had given up on after reading them, but now it is a pleasure to pick them up again, finish reading them properly from the beginning, and put them on the shelves. And I bought about 10 new books.
It has helped me a lot to come across the books of the author Yasushi Kitagawa, I have read 4 books in 2 sessions each and am about to start the 5th one. The writing is very likeable, easy to read, and even more instructive. I’ve been trying to post sticky notes on the passages that stuck with me, but there are so many that I’m having a hard time doing so. I read four books: “Life Traveler,” “The Book of the Wise,” “Because I Met You ……,” and “The Letter Man. I hope to write about these someday. Thanks for the wonderful books.
So I guess 150,000 yen was cheap. ……
