[Reflexes]

Reflexes

We have all had the experience of wondering “why didn’t I say it back then?” or “why did I put up with it instead of saying it?” The experience of not being able to say anything when someone has acted out of the ordinary and irreverently in a public place without regard for other people’s inconvenience, or when someone has made an unreasonable accusation that you don’t remember and you are outraged. There may be many reasons for not speaking up, such as “I read the atmosphere around me,” or “I was pushed into a state of surrender by the momentum of the other party,” etc. However, the fact that I could not speak up “at that moment,” while being filled with intense resentment, was so frustrating that I could not let go of that “anger” forever. When I think back to that time, even quite some time later, I sometimes feel as if it were only yesterday. In most cases, it is not the “someone” but the frustration toward “myself for not being able to say it” that arouses my anger over and over again.

It is a consideration that comes later, after one has regained some composure, so one can afford to think, “I should have done that, or I should have done that. However, I think it is very difficult to act precisely “at that moment. Maybe it is because I am Japanese. At least in the Japanese society that I know, when a problem arises, people tend to think in the direction of avoiding disputes and settling things quietly, if possible.
If it is really trivial, I think it is fine. How much is “trivial” and how much is “serious” may vary, and where the line is drawn may vary depending on the situation. It’s hard to say, but if the situation doesn’t cause anyone, including myself, to get hurt, I think it’s possible to tolerate it. If you are so mad that you can’t forget it even after so many years, it would have been nice if you could have dealt with the situation “at the time” so that it wouldn’t happen. Again, anything can be said in hindsight.

When such spur-of-the-moment events occur, I am weak in something like “reflexes” that allow me to make accurate judgments and take action. It would be a great feeling to be able to respond quickly and coolly in difficult situations. I will try to devise ways to become a person who can do that, but I am not sure, I think it is quite difficult for me. I have made a certain amount of effort, and the result is where I am now. However, I think it is an ability that is very worth challenging, so I will not give up and will continue to do so.

In the New Testament, in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 9, verse 49: “Every man shall be salted with fire.” In the Gospel of Mark, chapter 9, verse 49, we read, “All men are to be salted with fire. The word “fire” refers to “wounds,” and I understand it to mean that the wounds a person has sustained are what make him or her who he or she is.
I don’t want to get angry if I can help it, I don’t want to hurt people, and I don’t want to get into trouble. But it is true that I am “as I am” when I cannot respond on the spur of the moment, and it is also true that the wounds I have received and the sins I have committed have combined to create who I am. I am here now because I have experienced both the sour and the sweet. Therefore, I think it would be good to cherish the feeling of trying to change, but I want to live not only with regret, but also with gratitude, realizing that “the experience of being hurt by others” is a blessing given only to me.

There are times when you suddenly remember and get ticked off – you know what I mean?
