Safety Zone

An American friend of mine told me that Americans and French people tend to disagree when they are forced to do something. It’s a stereotypical opinion, of course, and not all of them are like that, but he said, “Most of us are like that. He said that the tendency to value individual freedom over discipline makes it so. He was also impressed with how obedient and wonderful the Japanese are.
When I looked at the way people responded to the instruction to wear masks in different countries, his point did not seem to be wrong. However, I think it is dangerous to lump all the national characteristics together. Knowledge is necessary to get along well with each other, but it is not good if it becomes a preconceived notion and changes the way we treat each other. This is a difficult problem.

It is difficult for me to completely eliminate preconceptions. If I had lived for decades in an environment where I was active around the world in my work and in everything else, where I spoke foreign languages fluently, and where I had more foreign friends, maybe it would have made a difference. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me, and I inevitably become defensive when dealing with foreigners I don’t know. I get nervous. In my case, it has little to do with the color of their skin, and I think that the moment I realize that someone is a foreigner, even a yellow one, and cannot speak Japanese, my change of heart comes out in my attitude. That’s “discrimination” in a big way. As long as I don’t get out of this, foreigner will continue to torment me.

I wonder if “inferiority complex” is also a part of discrimination. I don’t know if there is such a thing as “reverse discrimination,” but if you try to force the word “discrimination” onto someone in the sense of not treating them equally with you, I think you’ll get the point. I clearly have an inferiority complex towards people whose mother tongue is English.
When I was living in Canada for a while, I made a lot of Canadian friends. I was invited to some parties and I lived in a shared house where only Canadians lived. However, I felt as if I was a “guest” because of my inability to speak. When they talked to me, they all talked slowly and carefully, and when they did, I interrupted the whole flow. Maybe I should have just kept my head down and not worry about it, but I did, and it made me feel lonely. I knew that my friends probably didn’t care as much as I thought they did. My sense of inferiority may have stemmed from such experiences.

I am not able to open up my heart to others. I can’t expose my bad self and go out with a bang. I’m afraid of failure or being looked down upon, and I can only let my heart go out to others outside the safe zone where I won’t get hurt even if the worst happens. Then we will never be able to have a true and deep relationship.
I wish I could have had a real relationship. But I couldn’t. The reason why I am still studying English so hard is probably partly to get revenge for that time.

It’s not a matter of language ability, it’s a matter of heart, isn’t it?
