[Japanese Movies]

Japanese Movies

I am unable to watch Japanese movies and dramas. In terms of movies, I have seen quite a lot of them, but most of them were made in the United States. I think that the number of Japanese movies I have seen is probably less than 1% of the total. I’m not sure, but the most recent Japanese movie I watched was Bayside Shakedown in 2010. If you include Ghibli animation, the value of Japanese movies increases in my mind, but Ghibli is a bit of a separate category.

About a year ago, there was a Japanese movie on TV about a team of EMTs. I recorded it out of curiosity because it had been talked about a lot as a good movie. To be honest, I was looking forward to it a little. However, when I started to watch it, I found that it was not good. The development was slow, and the close-up shots of the actors’ faces were too long, making the film unbearable. I kept complaining to myself, “How can they stare at each other for that long in a normal life scene? Instead of following the story and getting absorbed in the film, I was forced to watch it like a critic. Once that happened, it was boring and I stopped watching halfway through. The slight disappointment of having my expectations betrayed and the regret of having wasted my time made my mind drift further and further away from Japanese films.
In hindsight, it seems that the film has a cast of young, beautiful and reputable actors, and they may have used a lot of close-ups of them, though it may not be a fan service. If they really wanted to make a movie for that purpose, they should have done it as a promotional video instead of a movie.

I am a native speaker of Japanese, and naturally I do not need subtitles for Japanese movies and dramas. Perhaps I watch too many English movies and dramas and feel inadequate without subtitles. In other words, I can understand the story of Japanese movies just by the images and sounds without reading, which may give me the illusion of a long time.
That may be part of it, but I think the biggest reason why I can’t watch Japanese films is that I unconsciously look down on them. The U.S. is the center of film production, with a history, passion, scale, and money that are all incomparably superior. It’s a world I admire. For some reason, I feel as if I am looking down on Japanese films from above, from an American perspective. The stereotype that Japanese films are bad is stuck in the core of my mind and won’t leave. I know this is extremely rude, but I can’t help it.

For the past few years, Japanese films have been making headlines and winning awards at some of the biggest film festivals in the world. It’s a great accomplishment, I’d say. I heard that it may even be nominated for an Academy Award this year in the Foreign Language Film category. I don’t believe that winning an award is proof of a good film. I feel that behind the scenes of such glamorous performances, there are more complicated and black-hearted adult circumstances swirling around than the pure selection of films. There are those who say that it is meaningless to be recognized in such a place, but it is a great achievement for a Japanese film to be featured in such a scene where the whole world is watching, and I am glad. I hope that one day a Japanese director will win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

I think my favorite is “The Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness”.
