[Shameful Self]

Shameful Self

A “sense of discrimination” that I probably didn’t have when I was born. Maybe I somehow have a sense of superiority just because I am a “male”. It is a feeling that came naturally to me as I was growing up. Perhaps when I was born, I did not care whether I was male or female.
I am Japanese (yellow), male, and straight. I think this fact alone may cause someone to envy me, look down on me, or distinguish me from others. I think I should be aware of the fact that I may be hurting others without knowing it, and I should speak up when I encounter situations where I am discriminated against.

Even within the same race or culture, people can be discriminated against based on their origin, place of birth, or various abilities such as academic or athletic ability. There is also a strong human attachment to appearance and physical appearance. And it goes without saying that discrimination against people with some kind of disability is rampant.
It seems to me that human beings have an inherent tendency to maintain their own stability by perceiving others as “lower” than themselves. I believe that “discriminatory consciousness” is certainly one of the causes and elements of human society. And I myself am definitely one of those who have discriminatory feelings, and I must not deceive myself about that.

In other words, I can say that I am against discrimination, but I cannot say that I am a person who does not discriminate. I will probably continue to live my life discriminating against something or someone without realizing it. Of course, self-consciously, I will try not to do so, but I feel that there is a darkness in the back of my mind, a weak and ugly mind that I cannot remove by my own power. Unfortunately, I think that is one of my essence, namely I am a “weak and ugly person. It is painful, but I must not run away from it.
The more I try not to discriminate, the more I am reminded of my ugly self. It is an instantaneous feeling, and I can try to correct it after I have thought it, saying, “Don’t think that way,” but I can’t control the outpouring itself. It is shocking and sad to think about it. It is especially bad when the mind is unprotected, such as when we are tired. When that happens, another possession of my ugliness becomes almost a certainty.

I always come to the same conclusion, and it pains me. But after all, I guess I have to admit and accept my ugliness and then see where it goes from there. I think the question is how to face discrimination with the basic contradiction of “I, who discriminate, oppose discrimination.
I don’t want to sound like I know what I am talking about, but I also believe that this question is not only being asked of me. It is a challenge for all humankind, and I am sure that everyone is facing the same problem. And I feel that each and every one of us must start by confronting ourselves properly. It may be an extremely difficult problem, but if we can start from the fact that we all have the same problem, I think there is hope. Toward peace.

After all, I don’t have confidence in myself!
