私は日本人で、日本に住んでいて、日本人に囲まれて生活している。私の周りには外国人の方が数人いるが、日本人との割合にしたら0.01％以下だと思う。ほぼ単一民族内での生活だ。テレビやネットで外国の情報がたくさん入ってくるが、実際に肌で外国を感じられる訳ではない。誰かが計画してそうなっているのではないだろうが、国際的かどうかという意味では非常に閉鎖的な空間の中で私は生きている。

　映画「大統領の執事の涙（Lee Daniels’ The Butler）」を観た。アメリカにおける強烈な黒人差別の歴史を描いた映画だった。登場人物の一人として高名なキング牧師役が登場するなど、黒人が奴隷だった時代からオバマ大統領が誕生するまで、ホワイトハウスで執事として長年従事した一人の黒人男性の生涯を通し、赤裸々に表現されている。アフリカにルーツを持っているというだけで、白人社会から迫害された「人間たち」が自由の為に立ち向かった、戦いの歴史である。
　日本の片田舎の小さなコミュニティー内で生きている私にとっては、この「差別される」感覚が本当の意味で分からない。30年ほど前にカナダで生活していた時に、カナダ人から「バカにされているな」と感じたことは少しあったが、「差別」や、ましてや「迫害」という言葉を使えるほどの酷いことはなかった。自由を奪われた覚えはない。
　今の時代のアメリカでは黒人の人たちにおいて、この映画のような差別はもうされていないと思う。肌の色が黒いという理由だけで公然と暴行されるなどということがあったら、世界的な大問題に発展するだろう。人権団体が黙っていない。しかし「差別」は、ちゃんとそこに残っているのだと思う。表立ってはいなくても、多くの白人の心の中に嫌悪感みたいなものは潜んでいるように私は感じる。

　ネットのニュースで、ハリウッドで活躍する日本人俳優が、映画やテレビ番組を制作するプロデューサーに「もっと日本人らしく見せろ」と言われたそうだ。彼はいわゆる天然パーマで、背も高く、アメリカ人から見ると日本人らしくないらしい。ハリウッドではアメリカ人が認める日本人の容姿を持っている人しか、日本人ではないそうだ。彼はプロデューサーに応えて、髪にストレートパーマをあてて、無事出演を果たしたとのこと。
　ビジネスとして、プロデューサーのその判断は正しいと思う。日本人ということがその俳優を配役するときのメインポイントだろうし、視聴者がその役柄を日本人として見てくれない事には、台本的にも上手くない。髪質を変えさせたことは仕方がないと思う。つまりプロデューサーはその彼の演技なりを評価して抜擢したのではなく、まず日本人であることありきだったのだ。そこには残念ながら小さな「差別」がある。アメリカ、少なくともハリウッドにおいては、日本人はいつまで経っても「よそ者」のようだ。

　「国際的」という意味は、「いろいろな問題に首を突っ込んでいくこと」なのかもしれない。日本の中で日本人に囲まれて平穏に生きていくことができれば、それは幸せなことだと思う。私は幸せを感じて生きているし、それで充分な気もする。しかしこんな小さなコミュニティー内から眺めているだけでも、世界にはいろいろな問題が起きていることを知ってしまっている。そうした問題だらけの地球上で、ひっそり平和に暮らすことだけが、神さまから与えられた私の使命なのだろうか。そこは掘り下げ続けていきたい。

　差別することで、「安定」を得る人もいる

Understand from Experience

　I am Japanese, living in Japan, and surrounded by Japanese people. There are a few foreigners around me, but I think it is less than 0.01% if I put it in percentage with the Japanese around me. I live almost entirely within a single ethnic group. I get a lot of information about foreign countries on TV and the Internet, but it doesn’t mean that I can actually feel foreign countries on my skin. I don’t think anyone planned it that way, but I live in a very closed space in terms of whether it is international or not.

　I watched the movie “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”. It was a film about the history of intense discrimination against blacks in the United States. The film is nakedly expressed through the life of one black man who worked as a butler in the White House for many years, from the time when blacks were slaves to the birth of President Obama, including the role of the famous Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as one of the characters. It is a history of the fight for freedom by “people” who were persecuted by white society simply because of their African roots.
　Living in a small community in rural Japan, I have no real understanding of what it feels like to be discriminated against, and when I lived in Canada about 30 years ago, I had a few instances where Canadians made fun of me, but It was never so bad that I could use the word “discrimination”, much less “persecution”. I don’t remember being deprived of my freedom.
　I don’t think that in the United States in this day and age, there is any more discrimination like in this movie in black people. If there were such a thing as being publicly assaulted just because of the color of one’s skin, it would be a major global problem. Human rights groups would not remain silent. However, I believe that “discrimination” is still there. Even if it is not visible, I feel that there is a kind of hatred lurking in the hearts of many white people.

　I heard on the Internet that a Japanese actor working in Hollywood was told by a producer of a movie or TV program to “look more Japanese. He has what is called a natural perm, is tall, and apparently does not look Japanese from the American point of view. In Hollywood, it is said that only those who have a Japanese appearance that Americans recognize are Japanese. In response to the producer, he had his hair straightened and permed and successfully appeared in the movie.
　As a businessman, I think the producer made the right decision. Being Japanese is probably the main point when casting that actor, and if the audience does not see the character as Japanese, it will not work script-wise. I don’t blame the producer for making him change his hair texture. In other words, the producers did not select him because of his performance, but because he was Japanese. Unfortunately, there is a small “discrimination” there. In the U.S., or at least in Hollywood, Japanese people will always be “outsiders.

　Perhaps the meaning of “international” is “to get involved in various issues. If I could live peacefully in Japan, surrounded by Japanese people, I would be happy. I feel happy and that is enough for me. However, even from the perspective of such a small community, I am aware that there are many problems happening in the world. Is it my mission given to me by God only to live quietly and peacefully on the earth, which is full of such problems? I would like to continue to explore this point.

　Some people gain “stability” by discriminating against others.
