[Before Negative Campaigns]

Before Negative Campaigns

There are people whom I feel, “This person is great, I can’t measure up to him.” People who are straight in their beliefs. They do not care about money, power, or anything else that is considered valuable in the eyes of the world, but rather they are determined to follow the path that they believe in. Many of these people are full of power and radiate an overwhelming vigor. They are always fighting, exposing their hearts to the world. They may not be aware of it, but from my point of view, I sense a “determined strength” in them.

All of those “strong” people around me are Christians. I guess the main reason is that I live in an environment that is very close to the Christian world, but in terms of the number of people I have come to know, there are far more people who have no Christian connection. This means that there is an extremely high percentage of Christians who live in a way that inspires me. I am not yet baptized, but I think this proves that there is something in me that seeks Christianity. I want to be like them.

However, even among those people who live the kind of life I aspire to, there are others with whom I do not fully identify. It is only natural that there are people who are the same “Christians” but have different ways of thinking. I wondered what the difference is between people who I really think are “great,” but at the same time I feel that they don’t fit in, and those who I think are “the real deal. I realized that it is usually determined by whether or not the person complains about someone.
In most cases, Christians are going to seek some kind of improvement to the current public system, and I am sure that everyone has a complaint. For example, many people, even non-Christians, may have doubts about the government, such as why Japan has not ratified the Nuclear Weapons Convention, even if they are seeking peace. I think that is an understandable sentiment. What bothers me, however, is the way they express their feelings. What I dislike is when people’s main argument is all about “denial” of the current system, which is akin to anger.

I have a strong tendency to look within myself for reasons why things don’t work. I don’t like trying to find outside reasons why things can’t be done, it just seems like I am looking for excuses. That’s why I don’t like the argument that “They can’t make it work because they’re not good enough.” That doesn’t solve anything. I don’t dislike it because it doesn’t solve anything, but I think we should join forces with our colleagues and make solemn efforts toward a good result, regardless of the outcome. Nothing will get done if all we do is complain.
Besides, I feel bad when I hear people complaining without reason. I don’t want to hear bad words. I am sure there are others who feel as I do. I am well aware that there is something noble in the aspirations of “strong people,” but bad-mouthing them diminishes their value. Perhaps it is because I am Japanese. But before complaining, I think it is more important to express the pure thoughts and ideas.

But then again, maybe that’s just bad language.
