[Unsung Hero]

Unsung Hero

Today I would like to write about my impressions of one of the teams in the World Cup soccer tournament currently taking place in Qatar in the Middle East. The team has a veteran player in his mid-30s who is leading the team as captain. In the sense of an ordinary Japanese salaryman, a player in his mid-30s is probably still in the last stage of his young career or in the early stage of his mid-career. However, considering the average lifespan of an active player in soccer, he has only a few years left. This will be his last World Cup as a player.

Many consider him the greatest soccer player of all time, having won numerous titles and captivated soccer fans around the world for nearly 20 years. I, too, looked forward to watching him play every week. The only thing he has not won is the World Cup trophy he is currently competing for. In other words, he has won all the awards and titles he could have won personally and brought all the titles he could have won to his club team. What he has not accomplished, however, is to dedicate the highest honor in the world of soccer to the people of his country. I think this fact is driving him mentally. The title of the team competition is not something that can be obtained by doing one’s best. And his tough rivals from all over the world are vying for the world’s number one position. As he enters the final stage of his career, one of the main attractions of this year’s tournament is whether he will be able to achieve his long-cherished dream.

Watching him play, I don’t sense any desperation in his game. He must really want to win this match, but I don’t get the sense of “desperation” at all. He spends most of his time flopping around on the pitch in the middle of an athletically demanding game of soccer. The more he walks, the more the other players seem to be sweating and chasing the ball around. It seems like a very inefficient way to work together, and what bothered me the most was that the players who were being forced to “run the extra mile” didn’t seem to get angry. Whether you’re a senior or a captain, “Run!” I thought it was common practice in the world of soccer to yell at them. So I even felt uncomfortable as they ran frantically with a flushed face, without a single complaint.
However, when I watched the scene when that team scored a goal and everyone was hugging and celebrating, I had a hunch. Whenever the captain scored by himself or when another player scored, everyone hugged the captain. It seemed to me as if everyone was playing hard to share the joy with the captain. Perhaps everyone, including the coach, was convinced that this was the right way to play the game. I thought that the other teammates had decided that they were willing to run through for the captain. No, rather, I think that running for the captain would be a pleasure for them.

I hear that many soccer players are egoists. That must be true, I think, because you have to be that much to be able to cross over in that tough world. But here we saw the rise of a young, strong group of players who had the joy of playing against the world with their idol, who has been in love with their country since childhood. And the walking captain himself was breathing on his shoulders with his hands on his knees by the end of the game. There was a weariness in the air that I could not see.
This once-every-four-years festival is entering its climax. In today’s world of soccer, where individual skills and tactics are in high demand, this team, whose energy comes from a passion like “soul,” deserves all the attention it can get.

I would run for Mipolin, though!
