2006年にトリノで行われた冬季オリンピックで、「カーリング」という競技が一躍脚光を浴びるようになった。「チーム青森」というチームが日本代表として参加していて、結局は7位で終わりメダルには届かなかったが、強豪に立ち向かった1次リーグでの奮闘ぶりが日本中から称賛された。「カーリング」というマイナーなスポーツが市民権を得るきっかけになった大会だった。
この時スキップ（主将）として活躍した小野寺選手とカーリングについて、「上を目指そう！」というタイトルで、私が当時mixiに投稿した文章を下に転載する。

カーリングの小野寺スキップが結婚するそうだ。「チーム青森」の一員として青森県で活躍していた彼女は地元の北海道に帰って新婚生活を始めるそうで、カーリング競技からの引退をほのめかしている。
カーリングという競技はあくまでも最初にチームワークありきなんだろうか？トリノにもチーム青森がそのまま代表チームとして出場していた。サッカーや他のスポーツのように各チームから良い選手を選抜して最強チームを結成するというやり方はあり得ないのだろうか？
小野寺選手は北海道でまた新しい仲間を集めて新しいチームを作って競技生活を続けられないのだろうか。小野寺率いる「チーム北海道」vsマリリン率いる「チーム青森」の対決なんてファンからすれば相当楽しめるんじゃないか。逆に言えば例えばそんな風に切磋琢磨しなければ個々の選手の技術は向上しないと思うのだが…。
小野寺選手はまだ27歳。あくまでも本人が「体力の限界を感じた」とか「競技に対する情熱が萎えた」とかそういう理由がないことが前提だが、カーリング界の第一人者としてこれからも活躍して欲しい。「あらゆるプレッシャーから解き放たれて愛する人と一緒に過ごしたい。」もちろんそうだろう。日本代表スキップとはいっても１人のお年頃のお嬢さんだ。家庭とスポーツの両立は難しいのであろう。言うのはたやすいが…。でも敢えて、できれば続けて欲しい。そうしないといつまで経っても日本は７位止まりだ。

あれから16年。カーリング女子日本代表は、先日の北京オリンピックで見事に銀メダルに輝いた。男女を通じて史上最高の成績だそうだ。銀メダルということは最高峰の決勝戦で試合ができたということ。すでに世界で日本チームを侮る国はいないだろう。サッカーのワールドカップで、もし日本代表が決勝戦を戦ったらと想像すれば、その凄さが私には分かりやすい。競技人口が少ないスポーツだからチャンスが多いと言えば間違いではないだろうが、そんなことはどうでもいい。その競技に関わる人たちの夢の舞台にたどり着いた。
先人たちがいたからこその偉業だと思う。2006年のブームのお陰できっと競技人口が増え、全体的なレベルが上がったことは疑いようがない。実際に今回、日本代表チームである「ロコ・ソラーレ」が勝ち取ったオリンピック代表権は、北海道銀行との決定戦で2連敗した崖っぷちからの逆転3連勝という両チームが死力を尽くした大激戦の末、かろうじて獲得したものだった。そういった経験が今回の結果に繋がっている。
文末まで来てカックリさせたくないが、私は正直カーリングがそこまで大好きでいつも観ているというわけではない。でも頑張っている人たちを観ていると何だか元気が出て来ることは間違いない。今後は世界でも追われる立場に立たされるのかもしれないが、まだせっかく一つ上の目標が残っているので、そこはみんなで狙っていってもらいたい。お疲れ様でした。

Curling
The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin brought the sport of curling into the limelight. A team called Team Aomori represented Japan, and although they ended up in 7th place and failed to win a medal, they were praised throughout Japan for their efforts in the first round of the league against a strong team. It was the game that brought the minor sport of curling to citizenship.
I wrote an article about Onodera, who played an active role as a skip (captain) at that time, and curling, titled “Let’s aim higher! which I posted on mixi at the time, is reproduced below.

The curling skip Onodera is getting married. Onodera, who has been active in Aomori Prefecture as a member of “Team Aomori”, is going back to her hometown in Hokkaido to start her new married life, hinting at her retirement from curling.
Isn’t curling a sport that is all about teamwork first and foremost? Team Aomori competed in Torino as a national team. Isn’t it possible to select the best players from each team to form the strongest team like in soccer or other sports?
Couldn’t Onodera gather a new group of friends in Hokkaido and form a new team to continue her competitive life? A showdown between “Team Hokkaido” led by Onodera and “Team Aomori” led by Marilyn would be a lot of fun for the fans. On the contrary, for example, without such friendly rivalry, I don’t think the skills of individual players will improve…
Onodera is still only 27 years old, so it is assumed that she has no reason to feel that he has reached the limit of his physical strength or lost his passion for the sport, but I hope he will continue to play an active role as a leading figure in the curling world. I want to be free from all the pressures and spend time with the people I love.” Of course she does. Even though she is the skip of the Japanese national team, she is still a young lady of her own age. It must be difficult for her to balance family and sports. It’s easy to say, but…. But I dare you to continue if you can. Otherwise, Japan will remain in 7th place forever.

It’s been 16 years since then. The Japanese women’s curling team won a silver medal at the recent Beijing Olympics. This is the best result in the history of men’s and women’s curling. The silver medal means that they were able to compete in the highest level of finals. No country in the world would have underestimated the Japanese team already. If you imagine if Japan were to play in the finals of the soccer World Cup, it would be easy for me to understand the magnitude of the competition. It would be wrong to say that Curling has more chances because it is a sport with a small number of competitors, but I don’t care about that. They have reached the stage of dreams for those who are involved in that sport.
There is no doubt that the boom of 2006 has increased the number of competitors and raised the overall level of the sport. In fact, Japan’s national team, Loco Solare, barely won the right to represent Japan in the Olympics after a fierce battle in which both teams fought to the death, coming back from two consecutive losses in the deciding game against Hokkaido Bank to win three straight games. Such experience has led to this result.
I don’t want to burst your bubble by the end of this article, but I have to admit that I am not a big fan of curling and I don’t watch it all the time. But I can tell you that watching the people who are doing their best is definitely something that cheers me up. They may be in the position of being chased by the rest of the world, but they still have one more goal to achieve, so I hope they will all go for it. Thank you very much for your hard work.
