[Gratitude → Positivity]

Gratitude → Positivity

Even if you are told to be grateful, I don’t think that gratitude is a feeling that can be forced upon you. I think it is nonsense to force a feeling, but there are people who do it.
If you don’t really feel “thankful” from the bottom of your heart, you can’t be “thankful. Isn’t that right? I was reading a book the other day, and it was argued that Japanese people who were born before World War II and those who were born after the war have a different sense of “gratitude. Even when they talk about the same thing, it resonates differently. There is a phrase that we often hear, “Just being alive is worth it,” and it is said that people born before and after the war perceive this phrase completely differently. It could be said that people have a different attitude toward life.

If we could truly appreciate life from the bottom of our hearts, it would change our lives. It would surely lead to the greatest joy. I am happy to be alive! I think our hearts would naturally become more positive. And if you can “always” maintain such a joyful state of mind, no matter what you are doing, you have already grasped happiness. But again, to do this, you need to be “truly grateful from the bottom of your heart. In a country like Japan, where everything is abundant and peaceful days are taken for granted, this is not an easy thing to do.

I am getting older, and some of my classmates have passed away. And many of the elderly people who have helped me have also passed away. In that sense, I think I have come to appreciate the importance of life much more than when I was young. However, I am still just a “weakling” boy born after World War II. I am not even close to those who have experienced the deaths of their relatives and friends who died for their country. In that sense, I have lived a safe and happy life.
However, by studying the circumstances of those who lived before and during the war and imagining their feelings, I believe that I can come closer to a true sense of “gratitude. Although it may not be possible, I think we can make an effort to think about them.

I am not saying that I wish I had been born before the war. There is always a meaning to my birth in this time period. That’s true that we cannot be told to “feel” what we do not feel. However, if we find meaning in what we feel, I don’t know whether it is through study or training, but I think it would be a sign of a positive mindset to take some action so that we can feel it.
It may sound a bit paradoxical, but if I can keep my mind positive, it may lead me to the feeling of being able to “gratitude”.

Today, I want to live strongly.
