一人の力には限界がある。私は何でも一人でやってみたいと思いがちだが、チームで一つのことに取り組む時の楽しさや高ぶりみたいなものも知っている。できればみんなで助け合いながら、仕事でも何でも進めていきたいと願っている。しかし現実には人件費やその他の経費、またスケジュール調整等の問題もあり、大勢で動くということは簡単なことではない。少なくとも予算を確保する等の“取っ掛かり”を付けるまでは、単独での奮闘を強いられる場合が多い。私個人の「志」、たとえそれが崇高なものであったとしても、それだけではなかなか人は集まってくれない。

　ところが社会に対しての不満や怒り等の「負のパワー」が共有されると、たちまち人々の輪が出来上がるようだ。反対運動や抗議デモの様子は恐ろしいほどの団結力を感じさせる。日本ではそれほどたくさんの抗議運動が展開されることは少ないと思うが、海外でのそれは、時に暴力的である場合も含めて、頻繁に起きている印象がある。人数の多さに威をかる部分はあると思うが、政府や自治体による統治の仕方に異議を唱えようとする姿勢は、非常に勇気がある行為だと思う。
　私は躊躇を覚える。例えば反政府デモに参加したことで顔と名前が記録され、要注意人物としてブラックリストに載るようなことがあるかもしれない等と想像してしまうと、よっぽどの事柄でないと私は立ち上がれない。だからそういう参加している人たちにとっては、“よっぽどの”事なんだろうと推測している。

　ミャンマーで、そういった民主化運動を支援していたとされる人たちが、テロ事件の首謀者だったとして死刑に処された。軍政に異を唱え、まさに命がけで活動していた人たちが公式に殺されたのだ。その中の一人のお連れ合いには、処刑に関する通知すらまだ届いていないらしい。
　このニュースはまたたく間に世界中を駆け巡り、各国からこの非人道的な一連の処置に対して、厳しく非難する声明が次々と挙げられている。人権を全く無視したこんなやり方が現代で現実に起こっていることに私は驚きを隠せなかった。これまでの軍による市民への残虐行為に加え、この事件はミャンマーという国が世界に悪名を轟かせる決定打になってしまった。

　非難声明を出した多くの国がそうであるように、どうしてミャンマーの高官たちがこういった処置をするに至ったのか、私も理解できない。信じる宗教の違いによるものなのだろうか。価値観の違いだろうか。社会的な知識の欠如が原因だろうか。それとも積もり積もったストレスのはけ口に犠牲者たちが利用されたのか。或いは、死刑に処された人たちが実際は“やり過ぎて”、司令部の逆鱗に触れてしまったのだろうか。どんな理由であれ、ミャンマー軍が後先を考えず実行してしまった愚行である、という世界的な評価から逃れることは難しいだろう。
　この処刑された人たちは、単にデモ隊に参加しただけの人たちではない。もっと中枢で運動を支え導いていた人たちだったように読み取れる。しかしそのことで殺されてしまったのだ。私はその事実に驚愕してしまう。世界に真の平和が訪れるのには、まだまだ時間がかかりそうな気配だ。

Protest at the risk of one’s life

　There are limits to what one person can do. I tend to want to do everything by myself, but I also know the kind of fun and high that comes with working on one thing with a team. If possible, I would like to work together and help each other to get things done. In reality, however, it is not easy to work with a large number of people due to labor costs, other expenses, scheduling problems, and so on. At least until we get a “start” such as securing a budget, we are often forced to struggle on our own. Even if my personal “aspirations” are noble, they are not enough to attract people.

　However, if someone shares the “negative power” of dissatisfaction and anger toward society, a circle of people seems to form instantly. The opposition movements and protest demonstrations show a frightening sense of unity. In Japan, there are not so many protests, but I have the impression that such protests, sometimes violent, occur frequently in other countries. I think the sheer number of people is intimidating in some ways, but I think it is a very courageous act to challenge the way the government and local authorities govern.
　I would be hesitant to do so. For example, if I imagine that my name and face will be recorded for participating in an anti-government demonstration and that I might be blacklisted as a person to watch out for, I cannot stand up unless it is a very serious matter. Therefore, I assume that it must be a “very big deal” for those who are participating in the demonstration.

　In Myanmar, people who are said to have supported the democracy movement were executed for being the ringleaders of a terrorist attack. These people, who had risked their lives to oppose the military regime, were officially killed. The companion of one of them has not even been notified of the execution.
　The news spread around the world in no time at all, and statements of condemnation were issued one after another from various countries in response to this inhumane series of actions. I could not hide my surprise at the fact that such a practice, which totally disregards human rights, is actually taking place today. In addition to the atrocities committed by the military against civilians in the past, this incident has become a decisive factor in bringing Myanmar into the world’s notoriety.

　Like many countries that have issued condemnations, I do not understand how Myanmar’s officials came to this conclusion. Is it because of differences in religious beliefs? Is it a difference in values? Is it due to a lack of social knowledge? Or were the victims used as an outlet for accumulated stress? Or did those condemned to death actually “go too far” and fall foul of the command? Whatever the reason, it will be difficult to escape the worldwide reputation of the Myanmar military as a foolhardy and unthinking act.
　The people who were executed were not simply protesters. It reads as if they were more centrally involved in supporting and leading the movement. But they were killed for it. I am astonished by that fact. It seems to me that it will be a long time before there is true peace in the world.

　It’s not enough to be surprised.
