[Reason and Emotion]

Reason and Emotion

We cannot choose our emotions. We can control them after the fact, suppressing or exploding, but we cannot choose the type or intensity of the emotion that arises and expresses itself in our consciousness. At least for me now.
As I have grown older, the intensity of my rationality has increased, and I am able to instantly suppress my original emotions as if they were never born. However, this was only a pretense, and my spontaneous feelings were always born inside of me. In a bad sense, knowledge, experience, and common sense formed a form of “reason,” hiding my true feelings from myself. But I believe that the reason for my existence in this world is the original emotions that are being covered up.

I always self-deprecate myself as a “bad person,” a “pathetic character,” etc., but I am not writing this because I want to put myself down unnecessarily. That is exactly how I really feel. I believe that I am, at my core, “the most amazing person in the world,” and I also believe that I have “a personality that puts my own interests first in everything. It is because I have come to realize such a foolish true picture of me that I am compelled to self-deprecate. To be honest, I did not want to be such a person, but I cannot change the fact.
I have come to realize this “true image of me” after years of experience and research. In other words, it is now the “starting point of thought” that I have finally landed on after much thought and consideration in my own way. This can be seen as reason influencing the way original emotions come out. Am I changing a bit by realizing my foolishness?

In short, my life may be a procession of clashes between reason and emotion. I may cover up uncontrollable emotions with reason, or I may use reason to the fullest to answer the question, “Why do such feelings arise? I am trying to think and think and think to the best of my ability so that I don’t have to think, or rather, I am trying to make spontaneous feelings what I consider to be “good quality” through a process of trial and error.

However, if my roots remain unchanged as a “selfish person,” then this may end up as a vain attempt. Or is there any meaning to my life in this attempt itself? All I can say at this point is that it is extremely difficult to use reason to influence the original kind of emotion, and I am not even sure if it is possible. But it is certain that reason can give me new interpretations, and new emotions can arise. I often use phrases such as “it just hits me,” “I have a clearer view,” or “there is a light in the room.
It is true that I am thinking hard. It is painful to realize one’s true nature at times, but I take that seriously and make an effort. However, I am not forcing myself to work hard. There is a part of me that can’t help but think about it. The miserable, useless me is the real me, but the me who continues to mindlessly ponder the question, “What am I a thinker?

 I can’t find the answer.
