[Your own path]

Your own path

There are various values in the world. Among them, “academic background” is considered to be one of the most valuable, or one that many people in Japan try to pursue. While it may be positioned as a prerequisite for a stable social life, entering a good school also satisfies a sense of elitism, in other words, once you enter a good school, you feel as if you are on the “winning side” forever.

Of course, the students themselves have such a sense of elitism, but I believe that in many cases, it is the parents who are poisoned by it. Is this not true? Even if they can get into a good university, they may or may not be able to get into a good company after graduation, but at least they will be in an advantageous position. That is why we encourage our children to enroll in good universities.
Recently, with the spread of various values, the trend of pursuing academic credentials seems to have weakened as much as it did a decade ago. However, the dominance of academic background is still strong, and I understand that it is still the most valuable status in Japan.

Behind this “once you get in” mentality of getting into a good school or a good company, there must be an illusion that “it will be easy afterwards. To put it a little more crudely, I wonder if people are under the illusion that “once you get into a famous company, you can live in peace for the rest of your life without having to work hard. Or perhaps you are under the illusion that “big companies can make money even if you don’t do anything.
I don’t have any experience with such prestigious companies, so I don’t know what is really going on. For example, perhaps they are protected by vested interests, and their management is safe and sound, or perhaps the people in the upper echelons of each company have been connected for a long time, and there is a system in place to ensure that work will always come around. I don’t know, but even if it was safe, I could not entrust my future to a company or someone else and live comfortably. Well, my academic ability was not good enough to begin with.

There are people who graduated from the University of Tokyo and are working hard with a sense of mission after entering society. I have nothing to say to those who are able to realize such a cartoonish life, regardless of whether they graduated from the University of Tokyo or not, regardless of what the academic background of the society is like. I think they are wonderful people. I genuinely envy them.
I know this may sound like the howl of a loser, but I don’t think that education is important. I think it is more important for adolescents to cultivate curiosity in order to find something they can devote themselves to, to improve their ability to concentrate when they find it, and to gain experience working together with friends. And I want them to develop the courage and determination to forge their own unique path, rather than to hang on to someone else’s values. With a note of self-discipline.

The old system will break down one day.
