[See you in another three years]

See you in another three years

Today, at the World Baseball Classic (WBC), the Japanese national team defeated the United States 3-2 in the final game to become the world’s number one baseball team. I have heard that there is a sect of Christianity that I believe in that “avoids all conflict,” but I have no problem with sporting competitions that have a spirit of respect for the opposing team, win or lose. If I were to deny a great event like today, some of the color would be stripped from my life. I was impressed by the hard work and dedication of the players on both sides who battled it out, and it was just a good time. I happen to have an emotional attachment to the game of baseball, and perhaps I am more moved by it than most people, but I sincerely hope that this kind of culture will continue to exist in the future, regardless of the religion one believes in.

Looking at the data alone, one might say that Japan, ranked No. 1 in the world, beat the U.S., ranked No. 3 in the world, in an orderly fashion. However, looking at the actual matchups and taking into account the environment in which each player has played, the U.S. team is considered to have been the stronger team.
In the case of baseball, however, it is by no means the case that a strong team can be built by gathering a strong group of players. I believe that the Japanese national team was able to win the world championship because of its overall team strength, preparation, tactics, and the high motivation of each and every member of the team, including the staff. I would say that Japan’s passion exceeded that of the United States. The U.S. was so strong that it would be impossible to explain their victory without interpreting it in this way.

This is the fifth WBC, and the U.S. had never fielded a serious team until the fourth WBC. The WBC is always held just before the start of the regular season in the major leagues, and the current major leaguers have been reluctant to participate because it would interfere with their preparatory training. The U.S. may have believed that they could win the tournament with only minor leaguers, but they lost all three times, with Japan taking the world’s top prize in the first and second tournaments. It was only in the fourth tournament that the U.S. finally got serious, and with the participation of major leaguers, the U.S. took the championship for the first time.
This was the fifth time in six years that the tournament was held, and I personally believe that the U.S. was not yet serious in its selection to win the championship again. The U.S. team was certainly strong this time, and Japan’s victory was a victory on a narrow escape from the jaws of death. I think the victory was really a paper-thin affair. However, to take one example, the U.S. team without Aaron Judge, who took the MVP award last year from Shohei Ohtani, is not the best team member.

This time, the Japanese team had literally put together a dream team for the tournament, which was exciting just by looking at the members. Not only were they a lot of fun, but they also achieved their goal of taking back the number one spot in the world. This is what I mean by emotion. I am happy too and really want to thank everyone involved. Thank you for the dream. Thank you for your hard work.
I think the value of the WBC is still low in the United States. I think it is very meaningful that Japan defeated the U.S. this time in the birthplace of baseball, the United States. The pride of the U.S. team and some Americans was hurt. I hope that the big-league officials and players will participate in the next tournament with a real dream team. And I am looking forward to seeing them again in the finals. Well, I can say this because we won. ……

I am very proud of the WBC Japan National Team. Thank you.
