[Exclusivity vs. Tolerance]

Exclusivity vs. Tolerance

I have a sense of wanting to protect my territory. In my case, I guess you could call it exclusivity. A territory that I do not want to be invaded by any person. For example, if I am the president of a company, it may be my own company, or it may be my family, my lover, or my way of life itself. Everyone has those “things that they don’t want anyone else to interfere with. It is no longer something within the realm of reason, but in the emotional realm. It’s an animalistic feeling that if someone can get into your life, even a little bit, you instantly snap and try to get rid of them.

I think I am usually seen by those around me as having a calm personality. It would be very sad if I am not, but anyway, I think I am seen that way. However, even I, who am such a mild-mannered person, suddenly have times when my animalistic feelings of losing my temper take over. Even I am surprised to find that there is such an area that I don’t want others to step into. You never really know when and where landmines are embedded in the human mind. Since this is the case even with myself, I should still be careful about my words and actions when dealing with others.
Recently, there is a tendency to make a fuss about harassment or compliance whenever something happens, which makes me feel very uncomfortable. However, in order to respect and value each and every individual, I think it is better to be that careful in our activities. I wonder if this is a sign that Japanese people are becoming more aware of the need to protect human rights.

After several such experiences, I have come to realize that a very strong desire for exclusivity exists within me, even though I am not aware of it. For someone like me, who sincerely wishes to be “tolerant,” I am the exact opposite. The more I pursue this ideal, the more I am confronted with my true nature, which is far from my wish, and each time I am disappointed. The end result is always painful.

I think that my desire to protect something has led to a desire for exclusivity. Not only that, but the act of trying to protect something can also, if done incorrectly, lead to feelings of “favoritism” or “discrimination. I want to be very careful not to let that happen.
However, I do not think that trying to protect something is a bad thing. I feel that there must be a “good way to protect something. In order to truly protect something, one must not shut oneself away and exclude others, but rather open one’s heart and share various things with various people. I feel that the more stubborn we become, the more we are in danger of collapsing our defenses. I believe that a “tolerant heart” is exactly what is required to protect.

The desire to protect does not necessarily mean exclusivity.
