なぜ地震や災害、疫病の流行などが起こるのだろう。私は神さまがなさったことなんだと思っている。でもその意図は分からない。神さまの御心を理解しようとすることなど、人間にはできないのだと思う。防ぐことができない自然災害。大勢が命を落とし、肉親を失った人々の涙が流れる。本当に凄惨な光景を見る私たちも、平常心ではいられない。

　そういった辛い体験をして、「神さまなんて、いない」とか、「どうして私だけがこんな目に遭わなければならないのか」と泣き崩れる人々がいる。そう思うのは無理もないと思う。そういう人たちに対して、「神さまはいるんですよ」とか、「神さまが助けてくださいますから」などとは、私は言えない。キリスト者なら話は別だが、少なくとも今、悲しみの最中にいる人たちにかける言葉ではない。キリスト教を説く以前に、寄り添うことがまず求められると思う。
　私たち人間にとっては間違いなく大惨事であることが、神さまにとっては必要な過程なのかもしれない。真実な方である神さまは私たち人間を愛してくださっている。私の理解を超えた領域のことではあるが、こういった災害も神さまの一つの愛の形なのかもしれない。受け入れることが極めて困難な現実の中で、残された我々は、また次の一日を誠実に生きていく。

　三時にイエスは大声で叫ばれた。「エロイ、エロイ、レマ、サバクタニ。」これは、「わが神、わが神、なぜわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味である。（マルコによる福音書15章34節）。イエス様が命を引き取る直前におっしゃった言葉だ。人間イエスが父なる神さまに向かって最後に叫んだ言葉。絶望の淵で、それでもすがり付くことができる神さまという存在があることの希望が示されている。
　悲しみのどん底で泣き叫び、かすかな光さえ見出せず彷徨い歩こうとも、「何故なんだ」とすがり付くことができる神さまがいてくださる。そこに希望があるんだと思う。

　繰り返しになるが、私には神さまの意図は分からない。理解しようとすることも必要なのかもしれないが、それよりも私は祈りたい。神さまがなさることを全て受け入れて、謙虚に生きていく。神さまが人間を滅ぼそうとするならば、それが御心ならば、御心のままに為させたまえ。たとえこの身が滅びようとも、神さまは私を愛してくださる。それで充分だ。
　能登半島地震のような災害が起こると、神を代弁するかのようにキリスト教の立場から宣う人が出てくる。まるで神の意思を把握しているかのように。それぞれのクリスチャンの考えがあっていいとは思うが、でもそういうことは、私は神への冒涜だと思う。刺激を受けつつも惑わされず、私らしいクリスチャンとしての考え方や生き方を探っていきたい。
　連日の地震被害を伝える悲しいニュースに心が悲しくなっていく。少しでも被災した方々の痛みが和らぐなら、悲しみを引き受けることもやぶさかではない。彼らのために祈ろうと思う。

　被災して亡くなった方々のご冥福を祈ります。

Acts of God

　Why do earthquakes, disasters and epidemics happen? I believe it is God’s doing. But I don’t know what his intentions are. I don’t think it is possible for human beings to try to understand God’s will. Natural disasters cannot be prevented. Many people lost their lives and the tears of those who lost their relatives flow. We, who see the truly horrific scenes, also cannot stay calm.

　After such painful experiences, some people break down in tears and say, “There is no God” or “Why should I be the only one to suffer like this? It is understandable that they feel this way. I cannot say to such people, “God is there” or “God will help you”. Unless you are a Christian, but at least those are not words I would say to people who are in the middle of their grief right now. I think the first thing we need to do is to lean in before we preach Christianity.
　What is undoubtedly a catastrophe for us humans may be a necessary process for God. God, who is the Truth, loves us human beings. Although in a realm beyond my understanding, these disasters may be one form of God’s love. In a reality that is extremely difficult to accept, we who are left behind will live another day of faithfulness.

　At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice. ‘Eloi, eloi, lema, sabachthani.’ This means: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (Mark 15:34). These are the words Jesus said just before he took his life. The last words the human Jesus cried out to God the Father. They show the hope that in the depths of despair, there is still a God to whom we can cling.
　Even if we wander around in the depths of grief, crying out, unable to find even a glimmer of light, there is a God to whom we can cling, saying, ‘Why? I think that is where hope lies.

　Again, I don’t understand God’s intentions. Maybe I need to try to understand, but more than that I want to pray. I accept everything God does and live humbly. If God wants to destroy human beings, if that is His will, let it be done as He wills. Even if this body perishes, God will still love me. That is enough.
　When disasters like the Noto Peninsula earthquake occur, there are people who proclaim from a Christian standpoint as if they are speaking for God. It is as if they grasp God’s will. I think it’s fine for each Christian to have his or her own view, but that kind of thing, I think, is blasphemy. I want to be stimulated but not misled, and I want to explore my own unique Christian way of thinking and living.
　My heart is saddened by the sad news of the earthquake damage day after day. I am willing to take on the grief if it will ease the pain of those affected, even if only a little. I will pray for them.

　I pray for those who lost their lives in the disaster.
