レストランなどの公共の場で、友人や恋人と食事に来ている感じなのに、話もせず、それぞれがずっとスマホの画面を見たまま操作している風景に遭遇することがある。決まって若い人たちだ。私の考え方や常識が古いのだろうか、そういう行動を見ると“理解できない”を通り越して何だか段々腹が立ってくる。どうしてせっかく目の前にいてくれる人間とコミュニケーションを取らないのだろう。スマホは家に帰って一人になってからでも存分にいじることができるだろうに。
　この問題は今に始まったことでないのは重々承知している。今さらテーマにするには少々遅いとは思うが、この現象が一過性の流行りではなく、随分長い間当たり前の風景になってしまっていることが恐ろしく感じる。これからも続くのだろうか。

　私はサッカーの試合を観るのが好きで、テレビ画面を通してではあるが、特にヨーロッパのプロサッカーをよく見る。もちろん日本代表チームの大ファンでもある。現在はアジアカップと言うアジアの国々が集まって競い合う国際大会が中東のカタールで開催されていて、日本チームも勝ち残って頑張っている。
　その大会をテレビで観ていて気付くのは、観客席の多くの人々がスマホを片手に観戦していること。日本人だけの事ではない。下手をしたら、せっかく現地で観戦しているのに、自分が撮影しているスマホの画面を通して試合を見ている人もいるようだ。記念すべき瞬間を記録に残しておきたいのか、或いは撮影した動画をSNSに投稿してお小遣い稼ぎをしたいのか、分からないが、その場を楽しむことよりもスマホの操作の方が重要になっているようにも見える。本当に時代は変わったと思う。
　私はそういう場面を見ていると「もったいない」と思ってしまう。アメリカメジャーリーグの大谷選手の試合でも同じような現象が起こっているようで、もしかしたらメジャーリーグの方がそういう傾向は酷いかもしれない。試合の前後でスタジアムを訪れた記念に写真を撮るなら分かるが、試合中は絶対にプレーに集中したいと思う。やっぱり私は古いのだろうか……。

　パレスチナの様子を伝えるニュースを観ていても、瓦礫に覆われたあの悲惨な状況を、スマホで撮影している若者たちを散見する。生死を彷徨うようなあれほど切迫した状況にあっても、「スマホは持っているんだ」と驚いてしまう。パレスチナの若者の状況がよく分からないが、個人レベルでも事実を撮って伝えることが、彼らにとって意味のあることなのかもしれない。ウクライナの映像ではあまり目にしないシーンのように思うが。
　パキスタンの人たちが、能登半島地震が起きた時に、東日本大震災の映像を使ってフェイクニュースを作り、あたかもその時の能登の状況を伝えるかのように偽装投稿し、SNSでお小遣い稼ぎをしていたという事件があった。誰もが簡単に使えるスマホによって、世界は変わってきている。

　そんなに簡単に金儲けができるなら、目の前にいる人を無視して、スマホの操作に没頭してしまうことは理解できる。金儲けに限らず、身の回りの環境や他人の自分を見る視線が自分にとって有利に変わるならば、ちょっと無理してでも頑張って操作してみる人もいることだろう。理解はできるが、しかし私は目の前にいる人との時間を大切にする。

　異常な光景だよ

　In restaurants and other public places, you may encounter people who are dining with friends or loved ones, but they are not talking and are operating their phones with their eyes on the screen the whole time. It is always young people. I wonder if my way of thinking or common sense is old-fashioned, but when I see such behavior, it goes beyond “I don’t understand” to a point where it makes me angry. Why don’t they communicate with the people who are right in front of them? Why don’t they just go home and play with their phones when they are alone?
　I am well aware that this is not the first time this problem has arisen. I think it is a little late to make it a theme, but I am afraid that this phenomenon is not a passing fad, but has become a common sight for a long time. I wonder if it will continue.

　I like to watch soccer matches, especially professional soccer matches in Europe, on my TV screen. Of course, I am also a big fan of the Japanese national team. Currently, the Asian Cup, an international tournament in which Asian countries gather to compete, is being held in Qatar in the Middle East, and Japan’s team is doing well to remain in the competition.
　Watching the tournament on TV, I noticed that many people in the audience were watching the games with their smartphones in their hands. It is not only Japanese. If you are not careful, there are people who are watching the games through the screen of the smartphone they are taking pictures of, even though they are there to watch the games. I don’t know whether they want to keep a record of the memorable moment or want to make some extra money by posting the videos they have taken on SNS, but it seems that operating a smartphone is becoming more important than enjoying the moment. I really think times have changed.
　When I see such scenes, I think it is a waste of time. The same phenomenon seems to be happening at Otani’s games in the U.S. Major League Baseball, and perhaps the trend is worse in Major League Baseball. I can understand taking pictures before and after a game to commemorate a visit to the stadium, but during a game, I definitely want to concentrate on the play. Am I old-fashioned after all? ……

　When I watch news reports on the situation in Palestine, I see many young people taking pictures with their smartphones of that miserable situation covered with rubble. I was surprised to see that even in such an urgent situation of life and death, they still have their phones with them. I am not sure about the situation of Palestinian youth, but perhaps it is meaningful for them to film and convey the facts, even on a personal level. It seems to me that this is a scene we don’t see much of in the Ukrainian footage.
　There was an incident when people in Pakistan made fake news using footage from the Great East Japan Earthquake when the Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred, and posted it falsely as if it were a report of the situation in Noto at that time to make some extra money on social networking sites. The world is changing with smartphones that everyone can easily use.

　If it is that easy to make money, it is understandable that people would ignore the people in front of them and become absorbed in operating their smartphones. Not only for making money, but if the environment around you and the way others look at you can change to your advantage, some people will probably try their best to operate it, even if they have to push themselves a bit. Understandable, however, I value my time with the people in front of me.

　It’s an unusual sight.
