ブラジルではサッカーが下手な人のことを「日本人」と呼ぶと聞いたことがある。本当かどうか確かめてはいないが、そういう話が出ると言うことは、少なくともブラジル人の間ではサッカーというスポーツが日本ではあまり盛んに行われていないという認識があるということだと思う。ブラジルと日本の地理的な距離が離れているように、サッカーという文化と日本人の間にも隔たりがあるという比喩なのかもしれない。
日本が世界のサッカーシーンにおいて最初に扉を開いたのが、W杯に初出場した時だとすると、もうすでに24年もの時間が流れた。24年経っても未だに世界の強豪の仲間入りはできていない。アジアでは常にトップクラスの位置を保持するようになったとは言え、肝心のW杯ではベスト16より先に進んだことはない。もう一つ上のベスト8到達は、今、日本サッカー界の悲願である。半年後に迫った次のW杯でその期待がかかる。大のサッカーファンである私としては、大いに応援したいと思っている。
W敗優勝最多の5回を誇り、現在FIFA世界ランキング1位のかのブラジル代表と、我らが日本代表との親善試合が昨晩日本で行われた。同ランキング23位の日本代表は今まで一度もブラジルに勝ったことがない。W杯ベスト8進出もさることながら、練習試合であろうと何だろうと、日本がブラジルに勝利することは我々サッカーファンのもう一つの夢でもある。そのチャンスが昨日訪れたのだ。
私は欧州サッカーの試合を毎週ハイライトでたくさん視聴するが、昨日のブラジル代表の面々は、ヨーロッパの中でも強豪とされるクラブチームに所属している選手ばかり。つまり私にとっては余りにも見慣れたスター選手ばかりで、正直、ミーハー的なトキめきを覚えてしまった。日本代表が対戦相手でなければ、ちょっと虜になってしまうような、キラキラ輝く憧れの集団だった。
それは彼らが、選ばれた人間にしか経験できない厳しい修羅場を掻い潜ってきた選手であることを意味し、本気でかかってこられたら、文字通り世界一と言ってもいいほど手強い相手になるということだ。6万人を優に超える観客が詰めかけた国立競技場には、私と同じような感覚のファンが多かったようで、私がテレビを通して感じたブラジルの選手に対する声援や拍手は、相当大きかったように聞こえた。もしかしたら日本選手に対するそれよりも。それだけサッカーを好きな人が日本にも多くいることの証明だと思う。ちょっと嬉しかった。
さて、肝心の試合はと言うと、土砂降りの雨の中、日本にとっては素晴らしい内容だったと思う。結果は日本の敗北だった。終始劣勢が続き、いつかこれをひっくり返し勝ちに持っていくまでは、まだまだ相当長い精進の道のりが待っていることを予感させる内容だった。だがしかし、世界1位との距離がグッと縮まったことを私は感じた。試合中もしかしたら、サッカーのことだから何が起きるか分からないし、勝ってしまうかもしれないと頭をよぎった瞬間もあったほどの善戦だった。
かつてブラジルが日本を相手にするとき、手加減を加えられてしまうほど力の差があった。現実にこれまでの対戦成績は日本の2分12敗だとか。しかし昨晩は日本が確かにブラジルを慌てさせることができたと思う。親善試合であるし、また日本のホームでの試合であるし、ブラジルの選手たちが本気を出していないかもしれない要素はいくつかあったが、それを差し引いても充分に可能性を感じさせ、観ていて久しぶりに興奮した試合だった。王国相手に恐れず挑戦し続けた、我らがサッカー日本代表の次のステップに、大いに期待したい。
ホントに日本は強くなったね～

Kingdom
I have heard that in Brazil, people who are not good at soccer are called “Japanese. I have not confirmed whether this is true or not, but I think the fact that such a story is told indicates that, at least among Brazilians, there is a perception that soccer is not a very popular sport in Japan. It may be a metaphor that there is a gap between the Japanese and the culture of soccer, just as there is a geographical distance between Brazil and Japan.
If Japan first opened its doors to the world soccer scene when it participated in the World Cup for the first time, 24 years have already passed, and 24 years later, Japan has yet to join the ranks of the world’s powerhouses. Although they have always held a top-class position in Asia, they have never advanced beyond the last 16 in the World Cup, the most important of all. Going one step higher, reaching the last eight, is now the long-cherished dream of the Japanese soccer world. The next World Cup, which will be held in six months, will be a great opportunity for Japan to achieve this goal. As a big soccer fan, I will be rooting for them.
Last night, a friendly match was held in Japan between the Brazilian national team, which has won the World Cup five times and is currently ranked No. 1 in the FIFA world rankings, and our own Japanese national team. Japan, ranked 23rd in the world, has never beaten Brazil, let alone make it to the last eight, and a win for Japan over Brazil, practice match or not, is another dream for us soccer fans. That chance came yesterday.
I watch a lot of highlights of European soccer matches every week, and yesterday’s Brazilian team was made up of players from some of the strongest club teams in Europe. In other words, they were all so familiar to me that I felt a bit of a meek thrill. If it were not for the Japanese national team, I would have been a little captivated by this glittering group of admirers.
The National Stadium was packed with more than 60,000 spectators, many of whom seemed to have the same feeling as I did, and I was able to see them through my television set. The cheers and applause for the Brazilian athletes that I heard on TV seemed to be quite loud. Perhaps even more so than for the Japanese players. I think it proves that there are many people in Japan who love soccer. It made me a little happy.
As for the match, I think it was a great match for Japan in the pouring rain. The result was a defeat for Japan. Japan was outclassed from start to finish, and it seemed as if they still had a long road ahead of them before they could turn this around and win the match. However, I felt that the distance between Japan and the world’s No. 1 was getting shorter and shorter. It was such a good match that there were moments during the game when I thought that maybe, just like in soccer, anything could happen and they might win.
In the past, when Brazil played Japan, there was such a difference in strength that they would have been able to take it easy on us. In fact, Japan’s record against Brazil so far is 2 divisions, 12 losses. Last night, however, I think Japan was certainly able to upset Brazil. It was a friendly, it was Japan’s home match, and there were a few factors that might have prevented the Brazilians from really going for it, but even without those factors, the game showed enough potential to make me feel excited for the first time in a long time. I have high expectations for the next step of the Japanese national soccer team, which continued to challenge the kingdoms without fear.
Japan is really getting stronger!
